The Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center and Fort Hood are located in Killeen, Texas, an hour’s drive away from the state’s capital of Austin and 2.5 hours away from Dallas-Ft. Worth and San Antonio. The Darnall Medical Center and its variety of clinics and medical homes support more than 42,000 active duty personnel and more than 145,000 family members and retirees within a 40-mile radius.
With its central Texas charm and mild weather conditions, year round recreational activities and sports are available for children and adults. An area known for the beauty of its natural surroundings, Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake are just short drives away and there are plenty of picnic areas, fishing, and wildlife to venture out and see. Entertainment is easily accessible with Fort Hood being a frequent host of celebrities, entertainers, and theatrical shows from national dance teams. Local talents perform at the Fort Hood clubs and cafes on a regular basis. Killeen is also home to the Military Museum, a must- see attraction, and Vive Les Arts Theatre, a full-time arts organization which produces several ‘Main Stage’ and ‘Children’s Theatre’ shows each year. Colleges Central Texas College and Texas A&M University-Central Texas are located nearby.
