Yogi Berra’s U. S. Navy Service Came before Baseball Fame — At age 18, Yogi Berra joined the Navy as a gunner’s mate in the middle of the war eventually being assigned to USS Bayfield just in time to participate in one of the most important operations in military history: the D-Day invasion of France.
Naval Oceanography Commander Talks Unmanned Systems Strategy at Undersea Warfare Conference — Rear Adm. Tim Gallaudet, commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, rolled out his command's unmanned systems strategy at the National Defense Industrial Association's 2015 Joint Undersea Warfare Conference, Sept. 22. The Naval Oceanography Unmanned Systems strategy will increase capabilities to collect environmental information for warfighting while sharing the Naval Oceanography community's two decades of experience with other unmanned systems stakeholders.
NAVSEA to Host Cybersecurity Industry Forum Oct. 30 at Washington Navy Yard — The Naval Sea System Command will host a cybersecurity industry day at the Washington Navy Yard to provide industry with information on cybersecurity-related contracting opportunities for various NAVSEA and Program Executive Offices, Oct. 30. Attending cybersecurity businesses will hear from NAVSEA leadership, cybersecurity managers and contracting experts from NAVSEA and five Program Executive Offices. The forum will address challenges in protecting data - monitoring, detection and containment of external and internal threats.
CNO, MCPON hold Hampton Roads all-hands calls — Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson and Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (MCPON) Mike Stevens held a series of all-hands calls at Naval Station Norfolk and Naval Air Station Oceana Sept. 22. The pair discussed the status of the Navy and took questions from Sailors around the Hampton Roads area in several forums, from flag officers to junior officers and enlisted personnel.
Research Vessel Neil Armstrong (AGOR 27) Delivered — The Auxiliary General Purpose Oceanographic Research Vessel (AGOR), R/V Neil Armstrong, AGOR 27, delivered to the U.S. Navy, Sept. 23. R/V Neil Armstrong will carry on the legacy of the naval aviator and astronaut who stated, "Research is creating new knowledge." AGOR 27 is a well-equipped modern oceanographic research platform capable of satisfying a wide range of research activities conducted by academic institutions and national laboratories involved in oceanographic research.
Team Vinson Wins Bob Feller Award — The Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) chapter aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) is the recipient of the 2015 Bob Feller Act of Valor Award. The award, named after Major League Baseball (MLB) player, National Baseball Hall of Fame (NBHOF) inductee, and U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Bob Feller, was established in 2013 to recognize one active Major League Baseball player, one chief petty officer and one member of the NBHOF who exhibit the same values, integrity and dedication to service that Feller himself displayed, according to the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award Foundation website.
Photography Shoot-off Comes to San Diego — The National Association of Naval Photography is hosting the 10th Annual Shoot-Off Visual Media Workshops, inviting Department of Defense (DOD) military and civilian employees within the San Diego area to participate. The event, aimed at providing non-profit educational programs for military and civil service photographers, offers workshops, portfolio review, mentorship, and culminates in a shoot-off competition.
Carter: DOD Provides 'Unconditional' Support for 'Lean In Circles' —Defense Secretary Ash Carter sat in on a Lean In Circle at the Pentagon Sept. 21 with Sheryl Sandberg, the best-selling author of "Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead." Sandberg is the founder of LeanIn.Org and the chief operating officer of Facebook. More than a dozen women of various ranks from across the services took part in the circle, including Air Force Secretary Deborah Lee James, Army Brig. Gen. Patricia Frost and retired Army Gen. Ann Dunwoody, the first woman in the U.S. military to achieve the rank of four-star general.
DON Signs Solar Energy Deal for Naval Station Norfolk —The Department of the Navy (DON) awarded a contract on Sep. 15 for the long-term purchase of 25 megawatts (MW) direct current (DC) to supply six percent of Naval Station (NS) Norfolk. The contracted was awarded to Virginia Electric and Power Company, doing business as Dominion Virginia Power (DVP). Construction of Morgans Corner, a fixed-tilt, solar photovoltaic (PV) generation facility, is underway in Pasquotank County, North Carolina and scheduled to come into service by April 2016.
USS Ramage Provides Assistance to Stranded Mariners — Guided missile destroyer USS Ramage (DDG 61), part of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, rendered aid to a distressed vessel, Sept. 18.
