Getting out of the military and transitioning to the civilian sector can prove trying for service members and their families, but you don’t have to go it alone. Plenty of guidance and resources are available through the Department of Defense Transition Assistance Program, as well as from your military leaders. Your leaders provide information and support, and ensure you have sufficient time off to attend workshops and counseling sessions.
Assistance from military leaders
As you prepare for transition, you need an average of 40 hours, spread over several months, to take advantage of services offered by the military. It is your command’s responsibility to do the following:
- Ensure full access to transition services
- Ensure eligible service members enroll in the required counseling sessions and workshops
- Designate a command transition representative to monitor separation and military retirement dates and personnel status
- Refer service members for pre-separation counseling and transition services
