Teams conduct 3D survey of USS Arizona and USS Utah — New technology enables the Navy to preserve important historical artifacts.

Navy's Largest Exercise Underway in the Middle East — The International Mine Countermeasures Exercise (IMCMEX), the world's largest naval exercise, with 44 participating nations from six continents, began with the Maritime Infrastructure Protection Symposium in Manama, Bahrain, Oct. 27. The exercise is organized and led by U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT)/U.S. 5th Fleet. IMCMEX is an opportunity for more than 6,500 personnel from navies around the world to hone the intricate defensive techniques necessary to search for and dispose of mines, which represent a threat to all nations worldwide.

Navy EOD Tech Division Combats IEDs during Exercise Bold Alligator — Explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) technicians assigned to EOD Mobile Unit (EODMU) 6 conducted a post-blast analysis at the site of a simulated improvised explosive device (IED) during Exercise Bold Alligator 2014 in Bougue, North Carolina, Oct. 29.

FRV Coveralls Perform as Designed, Prevent Injury — A message sent out to the fleet by U.S. Fleet Forces Command (USFF) last year introduced the Flame Resistant Variant (FRV) coverall and roll-out plan. The new FRV boasted a design superior to the Navy Working Uniform Type I and legacy coverall utility uniform in resisting fire and preventing burn injury.

World War II Bronze Star Awarded, 70 Years after D-Day Battle — Lieutenant Bentley D. Hodsdon, Supply Corps, U.S. Navy, Material Officer at NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center Jacksonville, had the honor of participating in a ceremony few get to witness, an award of a WWII D-Day Medal, Oct. 3. The award was in honor of his grandfather, Army Captain George M. Hodsdon Jr., for his heroic actions at the Battle of Saint Lo.

Naval Medical Center Portsmouth: First 'App' in Navy Medicine — Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) is the first facility in Navy Medicine to offer a smartphone app to help patients interact with the facility and their health care benefits.

"Grim Reapers" Introduce NAS Oceana to F-35C — The "Grim Reapers" of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 101 returned to Naval Air Station Oceana Oct. 28, bringing with them the future of Naval Aviation. The F-35C Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter completed its first landing at Oceana, providing Sailors a chance to learn more about the platform.

Navy Demonstrates New Autonomous Ground Vehicle with Modular Mission Capability — The Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD) and Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) Systems Center Pacific (SSC Pacific) Reconnaissance and Detection Expendable Rover (RaDER) team recently demonstrated the autonomous operation of the first RaDER prototype. The successful demonstration was conducted at SPAWAR's Point Loma Test Facility in San Diego.

DDG 1000 Shipbuilding Program Continues to Make Impressive Strides — DDG 1000 Program Manager, Capt. Jim Downey discusses the success of the Navy’s DDG 1000 Zumwalt class destroyer program.

Energy Action Month: ONR Expands "Green" Reach in Asia-Pacific — Two years after helping to establish a "green city" in Thailand, the Office of Naval Research (ONR) is expanding its quest for renewable energy and bringing the latest technologies to other parts of the Asia-Pacific region, officials announced Oct. 27. The announcement comes during National Energy Action Month, as the Navy promotes energy efficiency and conservation by participating in and hosting events around the world.
