Women's History Month: Rear Admiral Elizabeth Train and Rear Admiral Danelle Barrett — From the Revolutionary War to current conflicts, women have played a crucial role in the security of our nation and the success of the U.S. Navy. All Hands magazine celebrates Women's History Month by profiling women leaders and pioneers across the Navy.

Remembrance Ceremony for 2011 Great Tohoku Earthquake Victims Held at Commander U.S. Fleet Activities Sasebo — Members of the Commander, U.S. Fleet Activities Sasebo community came together to remember the victims of the 2011 Great Tohoku Earthquake on the event's fifth anniversary, March 11. The ceremony was held at the base flagpoles where both American and Japanese flags were flown at half-mast to join those of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force in mourning.

NRL Space-Based Solar Power Concept Wins Defense Secretary's Innovative Challenge — A team of scientists led by Paul Jaffe, spacecraft engineer at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), have been named winners of the first-ever Department of Defense (DoD) Diplomacy, Development, and Defense (D3) Innovation Summit Pitch Challenge, for the innovative concept to harness space-based solar energy to power terrestrial assets.

PAX Building Energy Monitors Promote Positive Energy Use — From lighting and heating office spaces to necessary equipment testing, energy use is a part of regular operations at any installation. Helping to make sure energy is being used efficiently is a dedicated group of personnel tasked as building energy monitors, or BEMs. The job of the BEM is to disseminate information about responsible energy usage to their coworkers, and to look for energy conservation opportunities in their respective buildings. They work with facility coordinators and their coworkers to take corrective actions regarding energy.

Navy-Marine Corps-Army Engineers Win Top Awards for Energy Harvesting Innovation — The Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) civilian engineers - along with their Army counterpart and a Marine officer — are envisioning thousands of Marines and Soldiers continually producing power, energy, and water while on the move.

Navy Service Migration Team Established to Migrate Navy Behind Joint Regional Security Stack — The Navy Service Migration Team (SMT), led by Naval Information Forces (NAVIFOR), was recently established as the Navy's designated advisory and action group to coordinate and direct the actions to successfully migrate base network traffic behind the Joint Regional Security Stack (JRSS).

CNO Concludes Trip to Bahrain, Qatar, and Iraq — Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson traveled to the 5th Fleet area of operations (AOR) to review Navy support of Operation Inherent Resolve and meet with Sailors.

Chief of Naval Personnel Testifies before Senate Armed Services Committee — Chief of Naval Personnel Vice Adm. Bill Moran testified before the Senate Armed Services Military Personnel Subcommittee to provide an overview of the Navy's personnel programs and policies, March 8.

Naval War College Historian Awarded Prestigious Oxford Degree — John B. Hattendorf, a maritime historian at U.S. Naval War College (NWC) in Newport, Rhode Island, was awarded a Doctorate of Letters (D.Litt.) by the University of Oxford, England during a ceremony held at the school, March 5.

Joint Infantry Company Prototype (JIC-P) solar panel is the topic of discussion between Marine Capt. Anthony Ripley and Eric South, Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division technical lead for JIC-P. While Marines are on break during a march, they can pull out the solar panels and recharge batteries. The system features bionic and solar power enabling Marines and Soldiers to patrol longer without resupply. The Business Intelligence Group (BIG) recently selected JIC-P for the 2016 BIG Innovation Award. BIG awardees are recognized for innovations that are making major impacts in today's world. Meanwhile, 3,000 business leaders selected the project as a "best of the best" finalist for the 2016 Edison Awards, a program that honors the most innovative new products, services, and business leaders across the globe. ERBIL, Iraq (March 8, 2016) Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. John Richardson addresses sailors assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 5 during a visit to Erbil, Iraq. Richardson visited the squadron in order to talk with the sailors and observe their capabilities as they support Combined Joint Task Force - Operation Inherent Resolve (CJTF-OIR). CJTF-OIR aims to train and equip Iraqi Security Forces to fight the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant while leveraging U.S. and coalition airpower to halt the terrorist's momentum. The lecture focused on the importance of our nation's maritime heritage by studying the completed construction of two fully-rigged sailing ships, Hermione and Oliver Hazard Perry. The evening lecture series brings speakers of national or international prominence or unique perspectives to the college and community and provide students a broad range of views on a variety of topics of national or international importance.
