Abraham Lincoln Sailors Commemorate 150th Anniversary of Namesake's Passing — As the nation reflected on the passing of the 16th president of our nation, Sailors assigned to the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) participated in a variety of remembrance events in Illinois, Virginia and the nation's capital to commemorate their namesake's long-lasting legacy, April 13-15.
Navy's Oldest Ship Receives Hull Cleaning — USS Constitution "Old Ironsides" received a waterborne underwater hull cleaning and comprehensive inspection in Boston Harbor, April 6-7 in preparation for its upcoming May 19 dry-docking. Constitution, the oldest commissioned ship in the U.S. Navy, last docked in 1995 and since then accumulated marine growth has fouled her hull. The Navy's Supervisor of Salvage and Diving (SUPSALV) administers the Navy's hull cleaning program and provides hull cleaning and inspections services through its government contractor, Seaward Marine Services.
Navy Athletes Selected to Participate in the 2015 Department of Defense Warrior Games — Forty seriously wounded, ill and injured athletes have been selected to represent the Navy during the 2015 Department of Defense (DoD) Warrior Games June 19-28 in Quantico, Virginia. Navy Wounded Warrior (NWW) - Safe Harbor is the Navy and Coast Guard's wounded warrior support program. Each of the Team Navy athletes is enrolled in the program, which has provided them with non-medical care and connected their families and caregivers to resources and support. NWW also links enrollees to adaptive sports opportunities, including the annual DoD Warrior Games.

LOCUST: Autonomous, Swarming UAVs Fly into the Future — A new era in autonomy and unmanned systems for naval operations is on the horizon, as officials at the Office of Naval Research (ONR) announced April 14 recent technology demonstrations of swarming unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) - part of the Low-Cost UAV Swarming Technology (LOCUST) program. LOCUST can launch swarming UAVs to autonomously overwhelm an adversary. The deployment of UAV swarms will provide Sailors and Marines a decisive tactical advantage.
Navy Accepts Delivery of USNS Trenton (JHSV 5) — The Navy accepted delivery of the USNS Trenton (JHSV 5), its fifth joint high speed vessel, April 13. Having completed acceptance trials only a month ago, the ship continues to meet key milestones as it progresses towards operational status. Now delivered to the Navy, the ship's crew will begin move-aboard and familiarization before the ship sails away from the shipyard to begin her shakedown period and final contract trials later this year.
Military Leaders Talk Seapower Strategy at SAS Expo — Leaders from the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard held a roundtable discussion about "A Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower" at the 2015 Sea-Air-Space Exposition, April 13. Rear Adm. Kevin M. Donegan, acting deputy chief of naval operations, Lt. Gen. Ronald L. Bailey, deputy commandant of the Marines, and Coast Guard Vice Adm. Charles D. Michel, deputy commandant for operations, held the discussion. They explained revisions made to the original 2007 document focused on building on the United States' relationships with allies and partners, preventing wars, and providing our nation's leaders with options in times of emergency.
Navy Bases Prepare for Hurricane Season — U.S. Fleet Forces Command (USFF), headquartered in Norfolk, Virginia, and Washington D.C.-based Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) are conducting the preparedness exercise Hurricane Exercise/Citadel Gale 2015 (HURREX/CG 15) April 20 - May 1. The purpose of this annual exercise is to prepare the Navy to respond to weather threats to U.S. coastal regions, and to maintain the ability to deploy forces even under the most adverse weather conditions.
SECNAV Directs Navy to Expand Use of LEDs — Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus recently directed that brighter, longer-lasting and more energy-efficient lighting be installed in U.S. Navy ships under construction as part of a strategy designed to help increase these ships' time on-station, decrease time spent on maintenance, and prevent shipboard injuries. Program managers for all new construction ships have been directed to pursue installation of Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs). Their reduced drain on the ship's electrical load, compared to conventional florescent bulbs, translates to increased time between refueling, which means more time on-station.
