Col. Daniel Kral, director of the Telehealth & Advanced Technology Research Center for the Army’s Medical Research & Material Command, Fort Detrick, Maryland, discussed how health information technology improves access to care. He presented during the "Providing Telehealth Services and Improving Access to Care Using HIT" session at the Defense Health Information Technology Symposium (DHITS) in Orlando, Florida, on Aug. 3. 

Kral said, just like all military assets, information technology (IT) must be planned with the future, not the past, in mind. He was joined by Public Health Service Cmdr. William Satterfield, telehealth/telementoring program officer for the Defense Health Agency’s Clinical Support Division, and Andrew Jacobs with the agency’s Health IT Investment Branch.

Exercise Patriot 15, an interagency field training exercise used to practice domestic operations within the U.S., occurred July 23 at Offutt Air Force Base. The annual exercise included aeromedical evacuation of patients with highly infectious illnesses from Volk Field, Wisconsin, to Offutt AFB; however, this was not the first time a scenario like this has occurred.

Family health clinic adds 1,000 appointments per month

The efforts of a team of group practice managers at the 59th Medical Wing, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, are slated to add 1,000 additional appointment slots per month in the Family Health Clinic.

Lieutenant Colonel Shane Crask, chief of surgical nursing at Fort Gordon, Georgia's, Eisenhower Army Medical Center, uses a wand to electronically track down a hidden surgical sponge with an imbedded Radio Frequency Identification chip.

Retained Surgical Items refers to things inadvertently left in body spaces following an operation. If not detected and removed, these items can cause infection and other complications. RSI can also lead to additional surgeries, and increase the hospital staff and the facility's exposure to liability.
