Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP)
SEAP provides an opportunity for students to participate in research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory during the summer. The goals of SEAP are to encourage participating students to pursue science and engineering careers, to further their education via mentoring by laboratory personnel and their participation in research, and to make them aware of DoN research and technology efforts, which can lead to employment within the DoN. SEAP provided competitive research internships to over 265 high school students this year. Participating students spend eight weeks during the summer doing research at 25 DoN laboratories.
Carderock has participated in this program for nearly ten years and typically select 30-40 interns through SEAP each summer. The application process and timeline can be found at https://seap.asee.org/. SEAP is a paid internship program.
Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program (NREIP)
NREIP provides an opportunity for students to participate in research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory during the summer. The goals of NREIP are to encourage participating students to pursue science and engineering careers, to further education via mentoring by laboratory personnel and their participation in research, and to make them aware of DoN research and technology efforts, which can lead to employment within the DoN. NREIP provides competitive research internships to approximately 275 college students (200 undergraduate students and 75 graduate students) each year. Participating students spend 10 weeks during the summer conducting research at approximately 29 DoN laboratories.
Carderock has participated in this program for nearly ten years and typically select 40-50 interns through NREIP each summer. The majority will work at our facilities in Bethesda, Maryland, but our detachments in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Bayview, Idaho; and Little Creek, Virginia also take interns (Little Creek is listed as its own lab by ASEE). Student Volunteer Program (SVP)
The SVP is our most flexible internship program. Students can come experience the work done at Carderock for a week, or they can work with our engineers and scientists for an whole summer or school year. All interns must be 16 or older, U.S. citizens (dual citizens are not permitted) and submit the required security paperwork.
Acceptance into the program is not guaranteed as it is based upon the availability of mentors at Carderock. The majority of SVP interns that Carderock hosts are either home-schooled or attend a school that has an internship requirement built into the curriculum. The SVP is an unpaid internship.
Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship
The SMART Scholarship for Service Program is an opportunity for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines to receive a full scholarship and be gainfully employed upon degree completion. Pathways Intern Program
The purpose of the Pathways Intern Program is a work experience that provides an opportunity for college students to pursue work that is relevant and beneficial to their academic studies. Work assignments are of limited scope and complexity, designed to assist the trainee in developing a basic understanding of administrative practices and procedures. Trainees provide assistance to higher level personnel performing routine or repetitive clerical/administrative support work such as: assisting specialists and analysts with gathering and organizing information and data for reports, responding to routine inquiries, maintaining filing or data systems, scheduling appointments and meetings using automatic systems, etc.
The program is an excellent opportunity for college undergraduate students to get an interesting, real-world experience in the field of administration while contributing to the defense of our nation.
