Military Health System Electronic Health Record

The Military's Electronic Health Record enables health care documentation from the Battlefield to the Home Front.

The Department of Defense’s Electronic Health Record (EHR) is an enterprise‐wide clinical information management system that provides secure online access to active duty Service members, retirees and their beneficiaries’ health care records.

This EHR is used by the military’s medical community to capture, manage and share data on care provided in garrison and on the battlefield, as well as share pertinent health information with the Department Veteran’s Affairs.

The development of the military's EHR is directly related to a presidential directive issued in 1997 that focused on and reinforced the need for a centralized, longitudinal patient record. This prompted the deployment of the of the theater environment information management solution, the Theater Medical Information Program, in 2003 followed by the worldwide implementation of the global system, AHLTA in 2004. In 2007, deployment of the military’s inpatient care documentation solution began. Today, the military’s EHR is used by more than 100,000 medical clinicians at military hospitals and cliinics worldwide.

For more information on the various programs, projects and initiatives used by clinicians in our military medical facilities to generate, maintain, store and provide secure online access to comprehensive patient health data, visit the Program Executive Office Defense Health Clinical Systems or the specific programs that develop and sustain the military’s EHR:
