The Role of the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron (HMLA) is to support the Marine Air-Ground Task Force Commander by providing offensive air support, utility support, armed escort and airborne supporting arms coordination, day or night under all weather conditions during expeditionary, joint or combined operations.

The current fleet of HH/UH-1N helicopters have been performing battlefield command and control, maritime special operations and Search-and-Rescue missions since initial deliveries in 1971. The UH-1N is being replaced by the UH-1Y.
