Gymnasium
The Callaghan Center offers a variety of inside and outside courts. Inside the gym, you will find one (1) full length Basketball Court, one (1) Cross Court Surface, three (3) Racquetball Courts, and Men and Women Locker Rooms equipped with showers and saunas. Lockers can be rented on a monthly basis for a nominal fee. Daily use lockers are FREE! Athletic equipment such as basketballs, racquetball items, and weight belts are available for checkout at the Gear Issue Desk.

Ball Fields and Outdoor Courts
Located at Scott Center Annex are lighted and non- lit softball fields, tennis courts, volleyball court, and a basketball court available for use to all patrons. A fee is charged to use the softball fields and reservations can be obtained through the Rental Office at (757) 396-7442.

Outdoor Pool

MWR operates one seasonal outdoor pool at Scott Center for recreational swimming from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

Need help passing your PFA?  Well let the Portsmouth fitness team help you one-on-one or your whole command.  No matter what your fitness level, we will help you get there.

We can design an assessment program to get you off to a healthy start and into a fitness regimen tailored to your needs.  This assessment includes any or all of the following if schedule permits:

  • Personalized Exercise Plan
  • Nutritional Guidance (Navy Guidelines)
  • Equipment Orientation with Strength, Cardio, and  Free Weights
  • Reevaluation of your Goals and Progress (Upon Request)

If you need assistance with your workout program at any time, or just looking for some friendly advice, we’re always here to assist.  All Fitness Assistants are National certified in Personal Training and Group Exercise.  We also specialize in the following:

The Fitness Center also has 2 Racquetball Courts, 1 Functional/ Command PT Room, Abdominal/Stretch room, Spin Cycle Room and a full size basketball court.   These all can be used for a variety of fitness events, Command PT, and games including Ping Pong, Dodgeball, Wallyball, Volleyball, and Basketball.


Group Exercise
NMCP Fitness Center offers a variety of group fitness classes to aid you in reaching your fitness goal.
  • SPIN-CYCLE: This indoor cycle class is designed to simulate terrain and situations encountered in actual bicycle ride, including hill climbs, sprints and interval training. This class is geared to all fitness levels.
  • PT4UrPRT: This class is designed to help your command meet the increasingly challenging Navy standards. The class combines, running drills, core strength, and upper and lower body strength.
  • CORE FITNESS: Learn how to effectively work your abdominals and lower back to develop core strength. May incorporate use of the Bosu ball and Stability ball.
  • STEP 2 IT: Using a step, this class shapes and tones legs, improves coordination, bone density, posture, and agility.
  • BODYSHAPING: This hour long class is filled with cardio mixed with resistance training using, Body bars, Free weights, tubing, plated weights, as well as a Bosu.
  • INSTRUCTORS CHOICE - This class can be any combination of the above classes.
  • CARDIO DANCE - This is a dance fitness class with specific beats and tempo changes that transition the workout from one toning, strengthening or cardio move to another, and targets every major muscle group in the body. Fun for all levels.
  • TURBO CARDIO KICK - This high energy class uses kick boxing combinations and techniques to give you the ultimate cardiovascular workout that will melt fat and reshape your body.

 


Sports

MWR Sports Program offers various challenging sports events throughout the year for active duty military stationed at NNSY, tenant commands, convenient to the berthed ships, and ships in overhaul.  Leagues and tournament events include Softball, Volleyball, Basketball, Football, and Soccer.  Monthly events include Three Point Basketball Shoot-out (3rd Wednesday each month) and a monthly competition / tournament in Racquetball, Tennis, Ping-Pong or Armchair Olympics.

All games are scheduled one week in advance with coordination between coaches and the MWR Sports Director on an availability basis.
