Naval Sea Systems Command

Naval Architecture and Engineering Department

The Naval Architecture and Engineering Department provides the technical expertise and world-class facilities necessary to perform research & development, test & evaluation, and technology and acquisition management in the areas of ship hydromechanics, system design, concept development, and integration analysis throughout the lifecycle of surface ships, submarines, unmanned vessels, and combatant craft.

We are the Navy’s premier source for conducting surface ship, submarine, unmanned system, and combatant craft concept & exploratory designs.  We develop relevant technologies, perform suitability assessments, predict performance via modeling & simulation, perform hydrodynamic experimentation and full scale sea trials.  Our work in naval architecture and engineering analyses ensures that our current Navy, Tomorrow’s Navy, and the Navy after Next will always be the dominant sea power.

The Naval Architecture and Engineering Department provides these services to the U.S. Navy, other DoD departments and agencies, U.S. Coast Guard, Maritime Administration (MARAD) and the shipbuilding industry.

We are naval architecture and naval systems engineering - the building blocks of the future Navy.

The Naval Architecture and Engineering Department undertakes work in the following areas:

  • Surface ship, small craft and boat and submarine research
  • Engineering, systems integration and technology development
  • Design integration and management,
  • Conceptual design, including development/support of ship design tools,
  • Preliminary and contract design,
  • Analysis of alternatives,
  • Naval architecture design and analysis,
  • General arrangements design and analysis,
  • RMA,
  • Specifications development,
  • Hydromechanics design, analysis, model testing and other experimentation,
  • Developmental and operational testing,
  • Technical information systems,
  • Sailor support systems,
  • Design and analysis tools and methods
  • Other naval engineering.

This department provides cradle-to-grave design and full engineering with lifecycle support for combatant craft, boats and watercraft throughout the Department of Defense and the maritime community.

Finally, this department provides the Navy's propulsor design and evaluation capability for surface and undersea vehicles.

Department personnel develop and use state-of-the-art computational tools and operate world-class experimental facilities including towing tanks, water tunnels and seakeeping basins with wave-making capabilities in aid of the Navy’s mission.
