VA ROTHR Wind Farm Compatibility at NSA Northwest Annex

Located in Chesapeake, Virginia, Naval Support Activity (NSA) Northwest Annex’s mission focuses on communications and information support to the Navy and other agencies. One of the critical tenants that functions in this information support capacity is the Forces Surveillance Support Center, which operates the Relocatable Over-the-Horizon Radar (ROTHR) system.

The mission of the ROTHR system is to provide wide-area air and sea surveillance to military and law enforcement agencies. The ROTHR consists of two locations, one located in New Kent County, Virginia and the other at NSA Northwest Annex. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) and effects associated with wind farms can impact proper functioning of the ROTHR.

The map below indicates areas of concern for potential impacts to the ROTHR transmit and receive sites located in Virginia.  Further studies are ongoing and may result in future modifications to the areas of concern.
