Family health clinic adds 1,000 appointments per month

The efforts of a team of group practice managers at the 59th Medical Wing, Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, are slated to add 1,000 additional appointment slots per month in the Family Health Clinic.

Through process improvements and increased efficiencies, 59th Medical Wing Group Practice Managers found a way to add 12,000 more appointment slots in a single clinic over the next year.

Soldiers transport a trauma victim to an Army medical helicopter in Tarmiyah, Iraq, Sept. 30, 2007. Recent improvements in the delivery of trauma care in-theater have resulted in a case fatality rate of less than 10 percent, down from approximately 16 percent at the onset of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Trauma care, within the Department of Defense, is a continuous and enduring mission in peacetime or wartime.

Physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, occupational therapists and providers from the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare systems gathered at the Center For the Intrepid for a three-day training symposium focusing on rehabilitation, adaptive sports and physical therapy best practices and innovations.

Approximately 100 medical experts from the DoD and VA attended the 2015 Federal Advanced Amputation Skills Training (FAAST) Symposium.

Maj. Becky Azama, 359th Medical Operations Squadron physical therapist, applies electrical stimulation to a patient Feb. 2, 2015, at the medical clinic on Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas. Electrical stimulation can be used as an alternative to medication for treating back pain. A new policy now allows active duty members with an acute musculoskeletal injury to make an appointment directly with a physical therapist.

The Air Force Medical Operations Agency has recently directed all Air Force Military Treatment Facilities to establish direct access physical therapy clinics for active duty members.
