Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is currently accepting applications for the following engineering disciplines:
Chemical  Civil
Computer Electronics
Electrical General
Industrial Mechanical
Materials Naval Architecture
Nuclear Welding


Starting positions include GS-5, GS-7, and GS-9 levels and salaries are based upon qualifications. 

Advancement/Career Progression is toward the target grade of the specific position being filled (GS-11 or GS-12).

Each announcement includes a questionnaire and your answers determine your ranking.  All qualified candidates will be ranked into one of three categories – Best Qualified, Highly Qualified and Qualified. 

To be considered for a position you must meet the minimum qualifications below:

GS-5 level positions
Bachelor's degree in Engineering (required for all levels)

GS-7 level positions
One year of graduate-level education or Superior Academic Achievement (GPA 2.95 or higher, class standing or Honor Society membership) or one year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level.

GS-9 level position
Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree or one year of specialized experience at the GS-7 level.

AND be found Best Qualified based on your answers to the questionnaire.

Individual Development
Each new engineer has an Individual Development Plan (IDP) that covers organizational structure, admin, safety, security issues, organizational products and work methods, technical skill development, job resources and tools, submarine systems and culminates in actual job rotation assignments.
