The problem of alcohol and substance abuse is a growing concern among the general public, military personnel, and veterans. Impacts of this abuse are both personal and societal, and include reduced levels of readiness, mental health problems, increased crime, and suicides. In addition, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other psychological health problems are strongly linked to substance abuse disorders. The Alcohol and Substance Abuse Disorders Program (ASADRP) was established in fiscal year 2010. Since its inception, the program has established a network of research teams with the explicit goal of accelerating the delivery of new or improved treatments, especially related to Traumatic Brain Injury and PTSD.

The program's approach is to organize multidisciplinary, team-based translational research efforts to expedite the process of identifying promising beneficial compounds to conducting human proof-of-principle clinical trials. If successful, this approach could result in translation of contemporary basic science knowledge into enhanced clinical pharmacological treatment protocols for alcohol and substance abuse disorders. Such medications also promise to improve public health and avoid significant social costs. Through research, these new medication-based therapeutic protocols will make a significate impact on alcohol and substance abuse, improving the health and lives of affected service members, their families, and the American public.
