Lieutenant Colonel Brian North’s Making the Difficult Routine is the first focused study of the US Army’s capacity to rapidly change task organization in the summer and fall of 1944. North finds that a shared educational experience and a common foundation in doctrine were the key factors in the Army officer corps ability to reorganize large combat formations in the midst of intense combat. This study suggests that this capability was critical to the Army’s success in the European theater in 1944 and offers important insights for the US Army today.
