How to Find Your DoD ID Number

The Department of Defense identification number, formerly referred to as the Electronic Data Interchange Personal Identifier (EDIPI), is a unique 10-digit number that is associated with personnel and their Common Access Card (CAC). The DoD ID is assigned to each person registered in the Defense Enrollment and Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS). This includes government civilians, active duty military, dependents, reservists, retirees and contractors. In time, the DoD ID number will replace the SSN in many Department of the Navy and DoD business processes.

The following are ways for personnel to determine their DoD ID number:

• On an NMCI computer, either prior to logging in or upon removal of the CAC, a window containing the 10-digit DoD ID number is displayed.
• For CACs issued after June 2011, the DoD ID number is displayed on the back of the card.
• When a document is digitally signed, the DoD ID number is displayed in the signature block.
• Go to the Military Connect website and find the DoD ID number of personnel and their dependents registered in DEERS by following these steps:
1. Click "Sign In" on the left side of the page.
2. Click "OK."
3. Click "Common Access Card (CAC)" login on right.
4. Click "My Profile Information" and then "Personal Information" in the drop-down menu.
5. Your name and DoD ID number will be displayed.
6. Click on any registered dependents on the left side of the page to display their DoD ID numbers.
• After 2010, the DoD ID number, instead of the SSN, will be printed on DoD-issued military and military-dependent ID cards.
• The DoD ID may be retrieved while logged on to a computer if the user has a CAC, CAC reader, and CAC middleware installed on the machine. To retrieve the DoD ID, follow these steps:
1. Insert the CAC into the reader on the computer.
2. Double-click the ActivClient Agent icon in the taskbar. (It looks like a CAC reader with a blue card sticking out of it.)
3. Select "Open."
4. Double click "Personal Data." The CAC pin may need to be entered to access the "Personal Data."
5. Click the "PIV Cardholder Identification" tab.
6. The DoD ID number is the 10-digit number listed within the "Person Identifier" field.
