Inflows on the Saline River at Bunker Hill Bridge near Wilson Lake Kan., Sept. 5. The third highest inflows ever recorded (23,000 cubic feet per second) were recorded at a nearby gage following a Sept. 2 storm.
Third highest inflows ever recorded lift Wilson Lake out of five-year slump
The third highest inflows ever recorded at a river gage upstream of Wilson Lake raised the water level by almost seven feet, helping the lake replenish from the effects of a five-year drought. Heavy rains from a Sept. 2 storm produced inflows at the Saline River gage north of Russell, Kan. of nearly 23,000 cubic feet per second. This brought the lake to 1.28 feet above the normal water level, and one foot above the seasonal water level management plan target.

Breaking down water: Who does that?
The Kansas City District manages a robust water quality program led by district limnologist Marvin Boyer. In addition to the 18 lake projects, this program is responsible for monitoring surface water quality issues related to watersheds, Civil Works projects and the lower Missouri River. Through this program, staff ensure the quality of the water is suitable for project purposes, existing water uses and public health and safety standards.

Fort Leonard Wood railroad timber replacement a success for district
Kansas City District recently completed a project to replace a portion of timber on a railroad bridge at Fort Leonard Wood on-time and within budget. Pictured here is a view of the 25-foot wooden span of the railroad bridge at Bundy Junction with the timber still in place.

Corps remains concerned about firewood helping spread invasive beetle
The invasive emerald ash borer continues to cause concern among U.S. Army Corps of Engineers natural resource managers who ask the public not to bring firewood from home to public wildlife lands and unknowingly transport the insect to new areas.

Future KC-46 home prepares for winter with arrival of de-icing tanks

With the upcoming potential for freezing temperatures, McConnell Air Force Base welcomed the arrival of two de-icing tanks capable of supporting the KC-46 Pegausus, Sept. 12.The 68-foot-long tanks were hauled from Los Angeles and will be put in the ground below the flightline to store de-icing fluid as well as the recycled run-off.

Smithville Lake aims to boost dwindling butterfly and bee population

Pollinators such as butterflies and bees have been on the decline in recent years, but the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Kansas City District is actively working to increase their numbers. Monarch butterfly populations have decreased by 90 percent due to loss of habitat and nectar sources. Milkweed, the sole food source for monarch butterfly larvae, has diminished drastically in the United States due to mowing and herbicide use, especially along roadways and agricultural land.
