Key military and government leaders cut the ceremonial ribbon for the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense Sept. 15. The new institute consolidates USAMRICD’s capabilities into one single facility of more than 500,000 square feet resting on 24 acres located on the Edgewood Area of Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.

Corps of Engineers awards contract to resume oyster restoration in Tred Avon River

9/27/2016--The Baltimore District awarded an approximately $1-million contract Sept. 26, 2016, to Blue Forge LLC to construct oyster reefs in the Tred Avon River Oyster Sanctuary in Talbot County. Eight acres of reef are planned for construction using mixed shell with the option for an additional 10 acres. Work will occur between December 2016 and March 2017. The Oyster Advisory Committee recommended Aug. 1, 2016, that the Corps and non-federal sponsor Maryland Department of Natural Resources continue oyster restoration in the Tred Avon River after an initial delay was requested in December 2015 to review restoration progress.

Army Corps of Engineers waives fees on National Public Lands Day, Sept. 24

9/20/2016--The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced today that it will waive day use fees normally charged at boat launch ramps and swimming beaches at its recreation areas nationwide in recognition of National Public Lands Day on Saturday, Sept. 24.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers launches second year of Every Kid in a Park program

9/1/2016--WASHINGTON (September 1, 2016) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced today it will continue its support of President Obama’s initiative, the Every Kid in a Park pass program, which officially begins its second year today. Launched last year, the initiative gives fourth grade students and their families free access to federal lands and waters as well as some state parks for a full school year.

European Reassurance Initiative projects on track in Estonia, throughout Europe

9/26/2016--Twenty-two European Reassurance Initiative infrastructure and construction projects managed by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Europe District at Tapa are nearly complete, and will support an influx of U.S. and NATO forces as heel-to-toe rotations begin in early 2017. The projects are a subset of a $500 million ERI Program the district oversees for U.S. Army and Air Force military construction, and facilities, sustainment, restoration and modernization in Bulgaria, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Romania, with future work planned in Hungary, Luxembourg, Norway and Slovakia. Europe District has approximately 260 projects in design or construction to make improvements to airfields, military quarters, operations centers, training ranges and support facilities throughout Europe.

100-year-old National Park Service's roots go deeper with U.S. Army

9/15/2016--This year, the National Park Service celebrates its 100th anniversary. Yellowstone National Park, the world’s first national park established in 1872 by President Ulysses Grant, has close ties to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The connection between the National Park Service and USACE is one that has continued through the years.

What's with the hat?

9/15/2016--Sharing roots with the U.S. Army, the park ranger uniform, be it National Park Service, Forest Service or U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, got its start with the First Cavalry’s arrival at Yellowstone in 1886. From 1886-1916, cavalry troops were assigned at several national parks. Each service uniform has insignia making it distinguishable from one another. Hat bands and badges are different for each service.
