Mission

PNSY Det-San Diego Aerial PhotoPortsmouth Naval Shipyard Detachment -San Diego provides the Undersea Enterprise with a highly skilled and efficient workforce, dedicated to first-time quality in the planning and execution for all intermediate level maintenance on U.S. Navy submarines home ported in or visiting San Diego. In addition, the detachment provides logistical support to shipyard personnel assigned to San Diego.

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Detachment - San Diego (PNSY Det-SD) was stood up in February 2008. The detachment is located at Naval Submarine Base, Point Loma. This intermediate maintenance facility provides a level of repairs beyond that accomplished by Ship’s Force but not requiring the full range of capabilities provided by a full service shipyard like Portsmouth.

The tempo at PNSY Det-SD is always fast-paced. The ships that are stationed at Point Loma—or that are passing through for a brief stop—are all operational ships preparing for deployment and providing support for other operational ships in the Pacific.

Due to the nature of ships’ operations, time is of the essence. While there is a well defined maintenance plan for the ships, PNSY Det-SD takes every opportunity to perform maintenance and correct emergent problems in order to keep the ships’ material condition as high as possible. This requires the USS Topeka detachment to be flexible, responsive and always ready.
