The Holiday Season is the time of year most of us enjoy spending time with our family and friends. Whether you’re celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or any other special holiday tradition, everyone needs to keep safety in mind for not only yourself but for your friends and family. This video shows just how fast disaster can strike. Please watch the video and consider the following safety tips to help you, your friends, and family have a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Home Holiday Safety Tips: 1. Never use lighted candles near a tree, evergreens or wrapping paper. Make sure they're placed so they can't be knocked down easily. 2. When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label "Fire Resistant." Although this label does not mean the tree won’t catch fire, it does indicate the tree will resist burning and should extinguish quickly. 3. When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness. A fresh tree is green, needles are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break. The trunk butt of a fresh tree is sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles. 4. Cut a few inches off the trunk of your tree to expose the fresh wood. This allows for better water absorption and help keep your tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard. 5. Use only noncombustible or flame-resistant materials to trim a tree. Choose tinsel or artificial icicles of plastic or non-leaded metals. Leaded materials are hazardous if ingested by children. 6. Take special care to avoid decorations that are sharp or breakable, keep trimmings with small removable parts out of the reach of children to avoid the child swallowing or inhaling small pieces, and avoid trimmings that resemble candy or food, which may tempt a child to eat them. Our very own Deputy Commanding General, Big. Gen. John Elam, visited U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's Engineer Research and development center labs. The visit last week gave Elam the opportunity to see the great work they are doing to get a better understanding of the effects of climate warming.
