SECNAV Portal Using Commercial Cloud Services Operational

Published, September 9, 2013

Fast FactThe first Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) portal hosted in a commercial cloud environment is now operational. This portal is the result of a pilot program between the Department of the Navy Assistant for Administration (DON/AA), the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command Systems Center Atlantic team and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The site, hosted by AWS, is part of the SECNAV Public Portal Initiative to establish a unified web presence where multiple Secretariat organizations share public content on the World Wide Web. The initiative standardizes technology used for public website development while reducing costs to the government.

This effort established a valuable baseline and a 'way ahead' for the DON to achieve efficiencies using commercial services for a more cost-effective approach. The use of commercial services in this manner aligns with guidance published in the DON Chief Information Officer cloud computing policy of June 4, 2013, which enabled DON organizations that host publically releasable information to move to commercial cloud service providers, as long as all security, technical, and mission requirements are met and accompanied by best value.

Several SECNAV sites have already transitioned to this portal. For example, the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Energy, Installations and Environment provides information on energy security, construction and maintenance of installations, environmental protection, military and civilian personnel safety, policies, and more. Other sites available from this portal include those for the 21st Century Sailor and Marine, DON Civilian Human Resources, the DON CIO, and DON/AA.
