It’s the Month of the Military Child! Continue to Give Kids a Smile

4/9/2015

We know that Children’s Dental Health Month is in February, but teaching kids healthy oral care can be done all year long. Take some time this month to make sure your kids have healthy mouths and understand the importance of oral health.

Think your child might be teething? All children develop differently, but the American Dental Association reports that most children start developing baby teeth between 4-7 months. Some babies may become fussy, sleepless and irritable, lose their appetite or drool more than usual and many may have sore or tender gums when teeth begin to erupt.

When your child’s teeth begin to come in, brush them gently with a child's size toothbrush and water. Consult your dentist if you’re considering adding toothpaste before your child is 2 years old; but be sure to start regular dental check-ups for your child after their first tooth appears, and no later than their first birthday.

Brushing at least twice a day, once in the morning and once at night should be a part of each child’s daily routine. You also want to get into a routine of scheduling dental exams every six months after that initial visit. This schedule, as well as getting no-cost preventive services, should help keep cavities away.

Family members are eligible for care through two types of programs: the TRICARE Dental Program and the TRICARE Retiree Dental Program. Both programs are voluntary programs which require enrollment if you are eligible. Look for more information on the Dental Care page on the TRICARE website.
