The Lights Are Out and Everybody’s Home: Now What?

2/10/2015

Winter weather can be beautiful to behold as you look out at the billows of snow and twinkling ice crystals. But beauty can soon turn into a beast if you are not properly prepared when the weather outside leaves you stranded inside.

When you’re stuck at home, there are many preparations that you can make to ensure that everyone is warm, well-fed and entertained. First, dress for the weather, layering to adjust as necessary. Children often jump and play and will quickly heat up if wearing too many layers. On the other hand, older people may be more sedentary and require a few more layers. Everyone, however, should be sure to keep their hands warm, preferably with mittens which offer better protection than fingered gloves.

Next, be sure you are properly stocked with food and medication for both humans and pets. Keep in mind, if the power is out, you will need food that does not need to be cooked. Everyone will also need an adequate water supply.

When planning your home escape for wintery weather, you may want to include an adequate stash of books, magazines, games, coloring books or toys that don’t require electricity or have an adequate supply of batteries. Severe weather is stressful and tension can run high for pensive parents and bored children.

Finally, don’t overexert yourself in the snow. Cold weather puts a strain on your body, even for people in great shape. Whether you’re killing time shoveling snow or helping your neighbor dig out their car, take it easy.

We can’t stop winter storms and extreme cold, but we can save lives by being prepared. For more information on being safe while sheltering in place, see the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association’s “Winter Weather Safety Tips.”
