I'm Using TRICARE Prime

Active Duty Service Members

  • TRICARE Prime is the only option you can use in a Prime Service Area.
  • You may be required to switch to another Prime plan when you move.
    • If you move within in the same region, you only need to find a new primary care manager.
    • If you move to another region, you can transfer your enrollment to another Prime plan, depending on the location.

Active Duty Family Members

  • Review the steps below to switch plans.
  • You may be required to switch plans when you move.
    • If you move within in the same region, you only need to find a new primary care manager.
    • If you move to another region, you can transfer your enrollment to another Prime plan, depending on the location.
I want to switch to: Follow these steps:
TRICARE Prime Remote

You can only switch to TRICARE Prime Remote if your sponsor is enrolled and you don't live in a Prime Service Area.

If you qualify, call your regional contractor to switch to TRICARE Prime Remote with no break in coverage.

TRICARE Standard and Extra

Disenroll from TRICARE Prime.

  • TRICARE Standard and Extra begins on the day after TRICARE Prime ends.
  • You may be locked out from re-enrolling in TRICARE Prime for up to one year.
US Family Health Plan

To switch to the US Family Health Plan, you must live in a designated area.

Call 1-800-748-7347 to transfer to the US Family Health Plan with no break in coverage.

TRICARE For Life

To use TRICARE For Life, sign up for Medicare Part B. TRICARE For Life begins when you have Medicare Part A and B.

  • If under age 65, you can disenroll from TRICARE Prime or stay enrolled.
  • If you have a family member enrolled in TRICARE Prime, his/her enrollment is separate from yours.
  • He/she can stay enrolled as long as they are eligible.
TRICARE Young Adult

If you qualify, you can purchase TRICARE Young Adult.

  • You're automatically disenrolled from TRICARE Prime when you're no longer eligible.
  • Enroll within 30 days of loss of TRICARE Prime to avoid a gap in coverage.
  • Go get a new ID card.

Retired Service Members and Family Members

  • Review the steps below to switch plans.
  • You may be required to switch plans when you move.
    • If you move to another area where TRICARE Prime is offered in the same region, you only need to find a new primary care manager
    • If you move to another region, may be able transfer your TRICARE Prime enrollment, depending on the location

  • If you keep TRICARE Prime, your individual enrollment fees are waived.

If you have a family member enrolled in TRICARE Prime:

  • His/her enrollment is separate from yours.
  • He/she can stay enrolled as long as they are eligible.
  • Family enrollment fees will reduce to a single enrollment fee if one family member has Medicare Part B.
  • If multiple family members have Medicare Part B, all enrollment fees are waived.
TRICARE Young Adult

If you qualify, you can purchase TRICARE Young Adult.

  • You're automatically disenrolled from TRICARE Prime when you're no longer eligible.
  • Enroll within 30 days of loss of TRICARE Prime to avoid a gap in coverage.
  • Go get a new ID card.

National Guard/Reserve MembersIncludes members of the:
  • Army National Guard
  • Army Reserve
  • Navy Reserve
  • Marine Corps Reserve
  • Air National Guard
  • Air Force Reserve
  • U.S. Coast Guard Reserve
and Family Members

Switching to TRICARE Reserve Select

If you’re enrolled in TRICARE Prime under the Transition Assistance Management Program (TAMP), the whole family will be automatically disenrolled when the TAMP period ends. For continuous coverage (as early as 60 days before or 30 days after the 180-day TAMP period ends) you can:

  • Log on to the DMDC Reserve Component Purchased TRICARE Application
  • If qualified, select "Purchase Coverage" and follow the instructions.
  • Choose the 1st day after your TAMP coverage will end as your TRS start date.
  • Print and sign the completed Reserve Component Health Coverage Request Form (DD Form 2896-1).
  • Mail the form and your initial premium payment to your regional contractor.
