Petty Officer 1st Class (SW/AW) Gilbert Washington

How does your job support USSTRATCOM and our missions?
My job is to provide various administrative functions for USSTRATCOM personnel to include: in-processing, transfers, separations/retirements, resolving pay issues, CAC issuing, and career development.
What do you find most rewarding about your work at USSTRATCOM?
As a personnel specialist, I take pride in being able to assist Sailors to the best of my ability, so others in the Navy can focus on their respective missions. Here at USSTRATCOM, I have the honor of providing the same assistance to the Air Force and Army. I consider it very rewarding when a Soldier or an Airman comes into our office and I am able to address their concerns.
What has been a challenge for you regarding your work at USSTRATCOM and how have you overcome that challenge?
The biggest challenge has been trying not to overload myself by immediately trying to learn the many administrative aspects of the Air Force and Army. I have always had a thirst for knowledge, and rather than try to absorb everything at once, I've learned to take things one day at a time, one situation at a time.
What has been your most memorable experience in the military?
I would have to say the 2012-13 deployment on board the USS John C. Stennis. Not only was it an incredible experience to visit the different countries in our area of responsibility, but the bond that was developed between everyone in my shop was very memorable. We went through a lot, but we went through it together, and I still keep in contact with the majority of them to this day.
What is the one piece of information or advice about working at USSTRATCOM that you'd pass on to new members of the USSTRATCOM team?
Do not be afraid to ask questions. There are still things that I'm trying to wrap my head around, and I've been here for a year! Get involved with the community. Since I've been here, the people of Omaha have been very welcoming and have provided a great family environment that made me feel right at home immediately.
