For those few voters who remain undecided a week before the 2016 presidential election, the choice between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton may come down to which potential new scandal they can look past. The FBI announced on Friday that it had discovered new emails that may be “pertinent” to its investigation of Clinton’s use of a private server while secretary of state. Meanwhile, new reports have emerged alleging “close ties” between Trump and the Russian government.
An explosion ripped through the Colonial Pipeline in Alabama on Monday, killing one person and sending gasoline futures rising more than 11 percent in early morning trading over concerns that the pipeline’s closure would lead to gas shortages on the East Coast of the United States. The explosion occurred when a nine-man crew working on the line struck the pipe containing gasoline with a backhoe at around 3pm local time, Colonial Pipeline said in a statement. The company shut down the flow through both the gasoline pipeline and a second accompanying line that carries other petroleum products after the explosion.

Pope Francis visited Sweden this week to kick off the 500th anniversary of the 1517 Protestant Reformation. Teeing up to address whether the Catholic Church will ordain female priests (spoiler: nope), the pope noted that Sweden had a thrice widowed queen. “I thought, ‘This woman is strong,’” he told a reporter, before helpfully continuing: “I was then told ‘Swedish women are very strong, very talented.
United Nations peacekeepers failed to respond to an attack on civilians by South Sudanese government troops at the Hotel Terrain in the capital Juba in July, less than a mile from a U.N. compound, a U.N. inquiry found on Tuesday. The independent inquiry assessed the response by the U.N. peacekeeping mission, known as UNMISS, to the outbreak of several days of fighting in Juba between South Sudan President Salva Kiir's troops and soldiers loyal to his rival Riek Machar. The U.N. inquiry found that peacekeepers did not operate under a unified command, "resulting in multiple and sometimes conflicting orders to the four troop contingents from China, Ethiopia, Nepal and India." It said that despite multiple requests for peacekeepers to respond to the attack on Hotel Terrain, "each UNMISS contingent turned down the request, indicating their troops were fully committed." U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has asked for the immediate replacement of the Kenyan UNMISS force commander, U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Tuesday.
Jurors concluded their first full day of deliberations in the George Washington Bridge lane-closing case Tuesday without reaching a verdict, but not without causing some heated exchanges between lawyers for both sides. The panel's questions reflected a possible division over the indictment's top two counts — whether Christie's former deputy chief of staff and his top appointee to the authority that runs the bridge conspired and then put into action a scheme to punish a mayor for not endorsing Christie in 2013. Jurors asked whether they could convict Bridget Kelly and Bill Baroni of deliberately causing traffic jams if they acquit them of conspiring to do so.
By Jonathan Barrett and Colin Packham SYDNEY (Reuters) - A report into missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 by the Australian safety investigator leading the search supports its view that the aircraft descended rapidly after running out of fuel with no human intervention, the agency said on Wednesday. Flight MH370 disappeared in March 2014 en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur with 239 passengers and crew onboard in one of the world's greatest aviation mysteries. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) report released on Wednesday said analysis of wing flap debris showed the aircraft was not configured for a landing.
By now, everyone in the automotive technology community knows Tesla CEO Elon Musk's opinion on using LiDAR systems in the company's vehicles: they're overkill. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) scanning uses beams of light to create a highly accurate "point cloud" of objects it sees and builds a digital three-dimensional view of the surrounding area. It's what Google, HERE, and Uber are using to build the highly accurate maps self-driving cars will use for navigation, and what most manufacturers are using to ensure the safety of their autonomous driving system for occupants and pedestrians around them.
British energy major BP and its Anglo-Dutch rival Shell unveiled upbeat quarterly profits Tuesday as both kept a tight rein on costs but warned over low oil prices. BP's underlying replacement cost profit -- the benchmark industry measure which excludes exceptional items and oil price fluctuations -- tumbled 49 percent to $933 million (851 million euros) in the three months to September from a year earlier. Royal Dutch Shell added that its profit excluding one-off items and on a current cost-of-supplies (CCS) basis -- which also strips out the changing value of oil inventories -- advanced 17 percent to $2.79 billion.

On a flight from Boston to San Francisco last night, one father sweetly asked for the help of fellow passengers to fulfill his daughter's Halloween. Stephanie Kahan, a passenger on the flight, tweeted that the father approached passengers during the flight out of Logan International Airport, and handed them all treats with a small note attached. Kahan told the Boston Globe that Molly, who wore a donut costume, walked politely down the plane's aisle, approaching each passenger to say, "Trick-or-treat," and collected her candy.
In the battle for headlines from SEMA, nothing quite beats adding horsepower. Clearly, someone powerful at Toyota knows this, because for this year’s SEMA show, the carmaker cranked a Land Cruiser up to 2,000 horsepower. The keystone to making those insane numbers, according to Toyota’s press release, are a pair of Garrett turbochargers that the carmaker describes as “volleyball-sized” strapped to the 5.7-liter V-8.

The blast on Monday occurred several miles from its biggest gasoline spill in nearly two decades in September. The shutdown will restrict gasoline supplies to millions of Americans in the Southeast and possibly the Northeast.
