  • Focus on special education leads to sustained federal rating

The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) gave Delaware its second highest rating in its evaluation of the state’s special education services. The state fell just shy of earning the highest rating. This is the second consecutive year Delaware has received the “needs assistance” rating and the second consecutive year it has seen progress: Delaware moved from an overall grade of 53 percent in 2014 to 68 percent in 2015 and to 76 percent this year. The state needed a grade of 80 percent to receive the highest “meets requirements” rating, a difference of one point on its evaluation.

  • 31 educators, college students join department as summer fellows

The Delaware Department of Education recently welcomed 31 summer fellows. All are promising future leaders and current educators who have a passion for education and want to gain hands-on exposure to policy work. Fellows are charged with important projects critical to Delaware’s policy agenda. They also are participating in weekly leadership development and speaker series sessions with Delaware leaders in state government and non-profit organizations. These sessions are intended to develop them as leaders and provide context on education issues of national importance. The fellowships will culminate in a presentation of their work and policy recommendations to department staff and leadership.
