Sports take the spotlight April 23-24

Mean Green football game

Andy BrewsterMean Green sports is in the spotlight April 23-24, with the Green and White football game, several softball games, a garage sale and a 5K and Fun Run scheduled.

One of the biggest events of the weekend is the induction of the members of the Athletic Hall of Fame at an April 23 luncheon. They were previously recognized at UNT’s Homecoming game Oct. 10. Which inductee holds the most starts for the Mean Green football team?

A. John Baker

B. Andy Brewster

C. Jonas Buckles

D. Scott Bowles

The correct answer is B: Andy Brewster, above right, who started a UNT record 50 games from 2001 to 2004, meaning the former offensive lineman started every game since his freshman season. He was also the only player in school history to block for four straight 1,000-yard rushers and led the Sun Belt Conference in sacks allowed, giving up just nine in 2004. Brewster helped pave the way for Kevin Galbreath to become the first back in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons.

The Hall of Fame Class of 2015 includes:

John Baker—Playing from 1997 to 1999, he was a record-setting, nationally-ranked punter averaging 47.2 yards per kick, which was the second-best average in the nation and destroyed UNT’s school record. No other player has come close to matching his career.

Scott Bowles—The former offensive tackle made his marks at UNT from 1987 to 1990, earning All-Conference honors in the Southland Conference four years in a row. Standing 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighing 280 pounds, Bowles was nicknamed “Big Daddy.”

Jonas Buckles —A defensive back who played from 2000 to 2004, he led UNT’s secondary to be rated as one of the top pass defenses in the nation and allowed only two teams to throw for more than 200 yards.

Pat Hicks—The standout point guard for the Mean Green basketball team still holds the school record for career assists with 526 from 1979 to 1983, nearly 200 more than the next closest in school history. He led UNT in assists for three straight seasons and had three of the top-four single season assist totals in history.

Dick Whetzle—He was the first UNT golfer to receive All-American honors in 1958, finishing one of the most distinguished careers on the course. A couple of Whetzle’s career victories came at the Southern Intercollegiate Championship, an event he won in back-to-back years in 1957 and 1958.

The standout athletes are the 33rd class to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, raising the membership to 186. The luncheon will take place at 11 a.m. April 23 on the Club Level of Apogee Stadium.

  • Buy tickets. Individual tickets are $20 or $150 for an eight person table.

But the luncheon is one of many events taking place during the April 23-24 weekend. Here’s a look at what’s going on:

Green and White Football Game—The annual scrimmage will give fans a first look at the 2016 football team under first-year head coach Seth Littrell. Gates at Apogee Stadium open at 1 p.m. April 23 and the game will begin at 2 p.m.

Mean Green Garage Sale— The Mean Green Garage Sale will take place at 1 p.m. April 23 in the Apogee Stadium concourse area inside Gate 2 on the west side of the stadium. The sale features new and slightly used surplus athletic apparel and equipment, including Nike jerseys, shoes, cleats, practice apparel, T-shirts, shorts, gloves, polos and more.

Mean Green Softball—The softball team will host Louisiana Tech University for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. April 23 at Lovelace Stadium. The series will wrap up April 24 with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.

#Dentonmeansbusiness 5K and Fun Run—Organized by the Denton Chamber of Commerce, the 5K and Fun Run will benefit Denton Mayor Chris Watts’ summer youth jobs program. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. April 23 at Apogee Stadium. A tailgate and awards ceremony will follow at 11 a.m.
