Service fee to be charged for credit or debit card payments

Beginning Jan. 1, a 2.7 percent service fee will be charged when a credit or debit card is used to pay a student account bill for educational expenses (tuition, fees, housing, dining, etc.) through Student Accounting and University Cashiering Services.

UNT accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express cards.

If a student doesn’t want to pay this fee, they may pay their bill by electronic check online, cash, check, cashier’s check or money order in person at Student Accounting on the first floor of the Eagle Student Services Center, or check by mail.

UNT is committed to providing students a range of options for paying educational expenses. However, providing complimentary credit or debit card payment services has become prohibitively expensive because of the processing fees assessed by the credit card companies and financial institutions. The expense is currently paid by University revenue and reduces funds available for other needs. This change is expected to save nearly $2 million.

Including a service fee on card payments is standard practice at most universities, including the University of Texas, Texas A&M University, Texas Woman’s University and many others.
