Today Neal Smatresk was confirmed as the next president of UNT. This was a good day for the university. I have now met with Dr. Smatresk several times and I feel confident that we have recruited a very competent, experienced president to help lead us to a bright future. I also can report that this is a man who understands higher education, likes students, is a good listener, and is sensitive to the feelings and needs of others.

My love for UNT and its people will not end when my term as president expires. It is a good feeling to know that Dr. Smatresk will be our leader. I ask that you give him the same respect and support that you have given me over the past few years.

Nothing could better demonstrate the greatness of UNT than the way our campus community handled the work, stress, pressures and rescheduling associated with the ice storm. The work of Facilities, Student Affairs and our public safety officers deserves special recognition, as well as those in University Relations, Communications and Marketing and other areas who kept the lines of communication open. I know there are many more who went beyond their job descriptions out of a special sense of commitment to students. You are my heroes.

I will see many of you at commencement this weekend, always a special time. And, to all of you, have a great holiday season.
