Track & Field Begins Outdoor Season At TCU Invitational

DENTON -- The North Texas track and field team has had a couple of weeks rest to prepare for the outdoor season starting in-state at the TCU invitational March 17-18 in Dallas.

The TCU invite will have 10 teams participating, including Abilene Christian, Arkansas State, Baylor, Harvard, SMU, Texas, Texas State, Texas Tech, UTA and host TCU.

The two-day meet will start with the women’s and men’s hammer event on Thursday, March 17. The women’s and men’s discus will also take place on Thursday. On Friday, March 18 the women’s and men’s javelin will kick off the final day of the meet.

Freshman Mikaela Haynes will compete in the women’s hammer throw joining veteran teammates Tori Clark and Ngozi Nweke. In the men’s hammer event, sophomore Kevone Kennedy and senior Riley Donovan will participate.

Nweke will be throwing in the women’s discus event for the first time this season. Kennedy and Donovan will be competing in the men’s discus.

Senior Chastity Stewart will be competing for the first time this season in the women’s 100 meter hurdles and the 200 meter dash. In the women’s 200 meter dash, seven North Texas runners will be joining Stewart, including classmate Nadiyah El-Amin who is coming off a top-10 finish at the Conference USA Indoor Championships.

In the men’s 200 meter dash, eight Mean Green sprinters will be hoping for fast times. Junior Collin Heard leads the group with a seed time of 21.18 seconds and senior Kedron Sowells is second on the team with a time of 21.30.

Freshman sprinter Justin Joe will be participating in both the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash hoping to jump start his outdoor season. Classmate Javier Lopez-Ibarra will be competing for the first time this season in the men’s javelin.

Junior Dominique Drayden, coming off a successful indoor season, will be taking part in the men’s long jump and the triple jump this weekend.

The final event of the meet will be the women’s and men’s 4x400 meter relay team.
