Andrew Torget, left, assistant professor of history, and Rada Mihalcea, right, associate professor of computer science and engineering, received a $50,000 start up grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities for Mapping Historical Texts: Combining Text-mining & Geo-visualization to Unlock the Research Potential of Historical Newspapers, which will develop search models combining text-mining and geospatial mapping that can help scholars research collections of digitized historical newspapers.
The Office of Digital Humanities, a division of the National Endowment for the Humanities, is committed to helping scholars advance research in this area.
UNT Libraries is the lead institution in Texas funded by the Chronicling America project, which will develop an Internet-based, searchable database of U.S. newspapers from 1690 to the present. The library's Digital Projects Unit also is involved in digital preservation.
