Men’s Golf Sits Second After Two Rounds At UTSA/Lone Star Invite

Junior Cory Churchman leads North Texas who sits in a tie for second place as a team after two rounds at the UTSA/Lone Star Invitational.

SAN ANTONIO – Junior Cory Churchman led the North Texas men’s golf team sitting in fourth place overall and a tie for second as a team after two rounds Monday at the UTSA/Lone Star Invitational. 

The Mean Green held a three-shot lead after round one but faltered in round two leading to a tie for second place after two rounds at the Briggs Ranch Golf Course. North Texas finished round two at 17-over par falling 16 shots back of first place 50th ranked New Mexico at 3-over par. 

Churchman opened the day with a two-under par 70 and finished with a second round 75 to place in a tie for fourth after two rounds. Sophomore Michael Cotton fired a first round three-over par 75 and shot one stroke better in round two with a two-over 74. Cotton is tied for 17th heading into the final round. 

Freshman Thomas Rosenmueller finished with an even par 72 in round one but struggled in round two with a seven-over 79. Classmate Ian Snyman shot a first round 1-over par 73 but dropped back with a second round six-over par 78. Rosenmueller and Snyman are both tied for 29th after two rounds. 

Junior Alejandro Villasana rounded out the scoring with a first round four-over par 76 and a second round six-over par 78. Villasana is tied for 40th with one round left to play. Sophomore Ross Martens finished with scores of 83-77 and sits in a tie for 77th place as an individual.

NT, ranked No. 68 in the golf stat rankings, will look to make a run at the team title heading into the final round 16 shots off the lead, which begins Tuesday morning. Live scoring can be found at www.golfstat.com.
