Sowells, Track Program Help Hundreds With Annual Winter Garment Drive

Nov. 27, 2014

DENTON - The track team has completed their third annual winter garment drive. Headed by Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) president Kedron Sowells, the team has toppled their previous record, donating over 300 winter garments to the homeless.

SAAC officers Chastity Stewart and Connor Bey also helped Kedron collect donations. Every track and field athlete donated at least one item, but some donated much more.

The team traveled to downtown Dallas to hand the garments out themselves. Sowells said that it means more to the team to be able give the garments out themselves. Places like Goodwill and the Salvation Army accept donations, but make people pay for the clothes that are donated. The track team thought it would be best to go straight to the source and give out the coats to those who need them most.

Hyatt Regency and Fire & Ice helped the track team by donating food and hygiene bags, as well as additional winter garments, to pass out to the homeless. The garments donated by North Texas student athletes will help people without homes stay warm in what is supposed to be one of the coldest winters Texas has seen in recent years.

Kedron and the rest of the SAAC officers plan to continue increasing their donations in upcoming years, and hope that when once they graduate, other track and field athletes will take charge. Thanks to Mean Green track and field student athletes, everyone can stay warm this winter. Happy Thanksgiving!
