Upcoming Travel-Learn trips include a five-day golfing expedition to Reykjavic, Iceland, in July with women’s golf coach Jeff Mitchell, and an 11-day trip to Prague and Southern Moravia to study the history and culture of the Czech Republic with Milan Reban, professor emeritus of political science. 

Reban is a native of Prague. Mitchell received the 2011 Coach of the Year in Support of Academic Success Award at the April 28 Spring Faculty Meeting.

“The Travel-Learn program offers a unique educational opportunity to broaden your horizons as you travel the world alongside a member of UNT’s faculty,” said Dianne Gibbons, manager of the program. “Our goal is to provide a variety of excursions that are educationally, culturally and socially enriching.”

All travel, lodging and site visits are pre-arranged and groups are limited to 15 to 20 people.

Denton resident Scott Lent takes one international trip every year, always aiming for locations off the tourist path.

In January 2011, he traveled to Chile as part of the Travel-Learn program, where he visited an archaeological site, explored the Glacier Alley fjord, took bicycle tours of street art and historic sites and learned about indigenous mosses and fungi.

“It was phenomenal,” Lent said. “The Travel-Learn trips aren’t your standard, run-of-the-mill adventures. They are unusual destinations. Also, having faculty on the trip to supply so much information about what we were seeing and where we were was so helpful.”

Travel-Learn trips are offered through Center for Achievement and Lifelong Learning, and are open to faculty, staff,  alumni, their family and friends, and members of UNT’s Emeritus College, a program that offers classes for individuals ages 50 and older.
