Pre-Orientation Freshman Pre-Orientation Homework Prior to attending orientation, all new freshman are asked to complete pre-orientation homework to explore personal traits, interests and skills, and select a major. Although we realize some of you have already selected a major, this process can also help confirm your choice. Pre-Orientation Homework will be available to new freshman students beginning May 1.  Log on to Blackboard Learn at learn.unt.edu with your EUID (example: abc1234) and password. On the top menu bar, select "organizations" and then your pre-orientation homework should be visible. Your homework is due before your orientation session. Students are uploaded to the Pre-Orientation Homework site on a weekly basis beginning Friday, May 1. ENGAGE ENGAGE is an assessment that measures personal and academic skills necessary for success in college. All freshman students need to complete this survey PRIOR to checking in for orientation. This survey is a simple way for us to understand how you are feeling about starting college at UNT this fall. As you respond to the survey, be honest; there are no right or wrong responses. Texas Success Initiative — State Requirements The Texas Success Initiative (TSI) is a state statute requiring all undergraduate students - new students, transfer students, and international students - who enter a Texas public institution of higher education to either: (A) Demonstrate readiness for college level reading, writing, and mathematics before enrolling in college level academic coursework by achieving the statutory threshold(s) on the state approved readiness assessment or (B) Meet one of the conditions for exemption from the testing requirement. Students must satisfy all TSI requirements before receiving a baccalaureate degree. Students who do not meet TSI requirements must complete developmental coursework to attain TSI compliance. All first-year and transfer students coming into the University of North Texas must have completed TSI testing or have a documented exemption before registering for classes. Your registration will be delayed if TSI status cannot be determined before your orientation session. Exemptions: Students are exempt from readiness testing if any of these exemption categories apply. If you are TSI Exempt, please send appropriate documentation to the Learning Center. If Not Exempt: UNT only accepts scores from the TSI Assessment for assessment purposes. The state-approved TSI Assessment measures college-level readiness in reading, mathematics, and writing. Some examples of prerequisite credit include: scores of 3 or better on the Calculus AB or BC Advanced Placement Exam, a score of 5 or better on the higher-level IB mathematics exam, and dual credit in mathematics courses with Texas Common Course Numbers: Math 2312 or 2412.  If you would like to take Calculus I as your initial course and do not have prior prerequisite credit, you will be required to take the placement assessment. If your major requires Calculus I, then you are strongly encouraged to take the placement assessment. 1. You are expected to take the online Pearson MyMathTest (MMT) prior to coming to your orientation session. Doing this is important for students majoring in Math, Engineering, Science, Economics (BS) and who need to start with Calculus I (Math 1710) or a Business major who needs Business Calculus (Math 1190). 2. You will find how to access the test and other important information about the placement assessment on the Math Department's website. Math Courses by Major (pdf)   Foreign Language Placement and Exam for Credit Students taking the Foreign Language Placement Exam may earn up to 12 hours of foreign language credit. The exam may be taken only once per language. Many degrees at UNT require some level of proficiency in a foreign language. Review your degree requirements at catalog.unt.edu to see if a foreign language is required.  Exams for placement and/or credit are offered in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Spanish. Music Meeting During Orientation All students who are not music majors but are interested in being involved with the College of Music during their time at UNT should plan to attend the music session during orientation to find out more about music minors, music classes for non music majors, auditioning for any of the performance groups, and the possibility of taking private lessons for the fall semester. We will also have information on applying and auditioning to be a music major available at this meeting. This session will be the morning of day 3. Students who have successfully auditioned for the College of Music do not attend this session. Anyone considering auditioning for a band, choir, or orchestra should also attend this session at this time. The information session will be available each orientation session. You will receive a schedule with specific times and locations at check in. AP Music Theory credit is not accepted at UNT; however, there are opportunities just prior to the beginning of the fall and spring semesters to receive credit by exam for Theory 1, 2, and Aural Skills 1 and 2. Click here for more information.

Orientation is a 3-day experience designed to help students and families become acclimated to the university.

During orientation, you will have the chance to meet with faculty and staff, meet your new classmates, connect with current students, learn about university resources, and receive academic advising in preparation for registering for classes. Housing

Part of the orientation experience is staying in the residence halls. Orientation participants will reside in Kerr Hall. Students attending orientation are required to spend both nights in the residence hall.

Freshman Orientation 8

Housing is not provided for session 8. Students living on-campus will move in to their fall residence hall home on the first day of orientation. Students who will be commuting to and from campus in the fall will be expected to commute (or make other arrangements) during orientation.

Students driving to campus should refer to the Google Maps for driving directions. The office of Orientation and Transition Programs does not provide shuttles to and from the airport. Students flying into either DFW or Love Field airport are encouraged to make alternative arrangements.

 

Disability Accommodations

Students who intend to register with the Office of Disability Accommodation (ODA) under the terms of ADA/504, or who request accommodations during their orientation session, should check the appropriate boxes on their orientation registration materials. Graduate Student Orientation

Congratulations on your acceptance to graduate school at the University of North Texas (UNT)!

After being accepted, you’ll want to attend a graduate student orientation.  Although not required, you’ll learn about UNT, your program and resources available to you, among other things.  You’ll also need to check with your department, as they usually have a required departmental orientation.  Check back for information on future orientation sessions as they become available.

If you're a new Teaching Assistant or Teaching Fellow, you should attend the Teaching Excellence Seminar.

In addition, international students are required to attend orientation through UNT-International.  Review items that will be covered by the UNT-International Welcome Center.

About Parent & Family Orientation

Parent Orientation is a special program that runs concurrently with Freshman Orientation and Transfer Orientation. The program is optional, but highly encouraged. Through this program, parents have the opportunity to learn about the many offices, services, academic programs UNT has to offer.

While you and your student will have separate itineraries, you will be together several times throughout the experience. Due to the nature of our programs, parents will not be able to attend college meetings, advising sessions, and actual registration. Parents will, however, be able to join their student after registration to help take care of payment if necessary.

Spring 2016 Orientation

In order to assist you with your transition to UNT, all new students are required to attend an orientation session. For students admitted for the spring semester, orientation is a 1-day experience. All students are required to participate in all orientation activities. Plan to be on campus until 5:00 PM.

Transient/Visiting Students

Transient/visiting students are students attending UNT for a semester with plans to transfer those credits back to their home institution. All new transient/visiting students are expected to complete an online orientation module through Blackboard Learn. The module for spring transient/visiting students will open the morning of Early Eagle (Friday, December 4). Transient/visiting students should log on to learn.unt.edu with their campus EUID and password to access the online orientation module. Course registration will not be available for transient/visiting students until 6:00pm on Friday, December 4.

La orientación de padres y familias en español es un programa especial que pasa al mismo tiempo que las orientaciones de Freshmen y Transfer. La mayoría de este programa estera siendo traducida por miembros de la universidad. Esta orientación de padres y familia es opcional, y no es requerida. En el programa, los papas van a tener la oportunidad de aprender de muchas de las oficinas, departamentos, y programas académicos que la Universidad de North Texas ofrece. Aunque usted y el estudiante tendrán diferentes itinerarios por la mayoría de la orientación, si podrán estar juntos en varios momentos durante esta experiencia. Desafortunadamente, por las reglas de nuestro departamento, los padres no podrán atender a las sesiones de asesoramiento ni registración de clases del estudiante. Sin embargo, si podrán estar presentes para dar el pago de la matrícula, si es necesario.

Orientation Details

What is orientation and why is it mandatory?

Orientation is a program all undergraduate students must attend prior to enrolling in classes at the University of North Texas. Orientation is the first step to a successful experience at UNT. You will become familiar with academic and other important resources, while receiving academic advising and registering for classes. Orientation is also an opportunity to build relationships with Orientation Leaders, other new students, and various faculty and administrators.

When is orientation?

Orientation for students beginning classes in the fall occurs throughout the summer, from May to August. For students starting school in the spring, orientation occurs in December and January. Students beginning classes in the summer will attend orientation during the summer. Please refer to the Orientation homepage and Orientation brochures for exact dates. If you cannot attend any of the orientations listed, please contact the Office of Orientation and Transition Programs at (940) 565-4198.

Are there vaccinations I must turn in prior to orientation?

No, but if you are taking classes on campus and are under the age of 22, you must provide proof of evidence for the meningitis vaccination:

All new students, including transfer students, under the age of 22 must show evidence of receipt of an initial bacterial meningitis vaccination (meningococcal meningitis vaccine) dose or booster in the last five years and at least ten days prior to the start of the semester in which the student initially enrolls. Do I need to attend all the Orientation activities?

Yes, students are required to attend all activities and presentations at Orientation. Attendance is crucial in ensuring a successful orientation and to ensure a good start at UNT.

When do I get my UNT ID card?

You will have your UNT ID card made during orientation. Specific times in the orientation schedule have been created for you to have your ID made. Your first ID card is included in your university fees. Lost cards can be replaced for an additional $10.

What do I do after orientation, before I come to school?

After attending orientation, you will want to make sure you have completed your housing and financial aid processes. You will also want to consider purchasing your textbooks.

I am a second Bachelors student; do I need to attend orientation?

Students seeking a second Bachelors degree (post-bacc students) are not required to attend orientation, unless their college/school requires it. Please call the office of Orientation and Transition Programs at 940-565-4198 to see if your college/school requires orientation. The fee for orientation will be waived for post-bacc students.

Cost & Payment Options

When do I pay for orientation?

You must provide payment with your reservation in order to secure a spot in an orientation session. Payment can be received in the form of an e-check or credit card. Your space will not be reserved until payment is received.

What does my Orientation fee cover?

Your fee is used for program implementation and staffing, orientation publications, room & board (for freshman), and facilities used during orientation. The fee also provides for year-round orientation programming for all new students.

What if I cannot pay for my orientation?

Financial constraints will not prohibit you from attending orientation. The office of Orientation and Transition Programs offers fee deferments to students who have applied for financial aid and have met certain eligibility requirements. To request a Fee Deferment Form, contact freshman@unt.edu

If I have paid and registered for my orientation session and decide not to attend UNT, is my fee refundable?

All orientation fees are non-refundable, including Parent Orientation fees. If you have an extenuating circumstance, you may complete the Orientation Refund Request Form below. Please note that requests are not automatic and are reviewed by a staff member within 7-10 business days of the request. The decision to attend another college or university is NOT an extenuating circumstance.

How to Register for Orientation

When will I receive materials and be able to register for orientation?

Brochures with specific information regarding orientation are mailed to all ACCEPTED students on the following schedule: Fall admission — brochures will begin to be mailed in February; Spring admission — brochures will begin to be mailed in October; and Summer admission — brochures will be available in February.

When should I register for orientation?

Because all orientation sessions are capped and space is awarded on a first come, first served basis, we strongly encourage you to register for orientation as soon as it becomes available to you.

How do I register for orientation?

Students are required to register for orientation online. To register for an orientation session, logon to MyUNT with your EUID and password and click, "register for orientation." If you do not have access to a computer, please contact the office of Orientation and Transition Programs at (940) 565-4198 for assistance.

Will I get confirmation once I have registered for orientation?

Yes, confirmation cards, with your assigned orientation date, are mailed out on a regular basis. Students should receive a confirmation card a week after registering online. If you do not receive a confirmation card and your orientation date is approaching please call us at (940) 565-4198 to confirm your registration.

Confirmation emails are also sent to a student UNT accounts prior to their orientation session.

Can I change my orientation session?

Yes, if space is available. Please call the office of Orientation and Transition Programs at (940) 565-4198.

Academic Advising & Course Registration

Will I be academically advised during orientation?

Yes. Academic advisors help all students evaluate previous coursework and plan for their major course of study in order to meet their educational goals. Family members are not allowed to sit in on this session due to facility constraints. However, students are encouraged to consult with family members, if necessary, before registering for classes.

Will I learn how to register for classes and when do I register for my classes?

Yes, you will learn how to register online for classes and will have the opportunity to do so with the help of the Orientation Leader staff at the conclusion of your orientation session.

How and when will I pay for classes?

Your bill will then be available to view and pay in your student center on MyUNT after you have registered for classes.

Can I see my class schedule any time?

Yes, you can view your class schedule on MyUNT. To login to MyUNT you will need your EUID and password. If you don't know your EUID or password just click on "What is my EUID?" and it will just take a few minutes to get it all set up before you can log in.

Transfer Students

I am a transfer student and already attended a 4-year institution before. Why do I need to attend orientation?

We respect your college experience and understand that you are likely able to navigate a university catalog and schedule of classes. Orientation is designed to acquaint you with UNT's approach to academic success as well as the resources unique to this university.

Summer Students

If I started school in the summer, do I need to attend another orientation for the fall?

No. You will be considered a continuing student and will follow the regular registration schedule to register for fall classes.

I am an international student; do I need to attend orientation?

Parent Orientation

Can family members attend Orientation?

Yes. Parents and family members are encouraged to attend the Parent Orientation program that runs concurrently with new student or transfer orientation. Parent Orientation is designed specifically for parents, guardians, and spouses of new students. No programming exists for children; however, they are allowed to attend with you if necessary. Parent and family member registration materials are included in the freshman orientation booklet and the transfer orientation brochure. A nominal fee is assessed for parent orientation programming.

What is an Orientation Leader?

Orientation Leaders are peer mentors who are selected and trained by the University of North Texas to assist with new student transition to UNT.  Orientation Leaders are hired during the spring semester and go through intensive training during the spring and summer.  This unique leadership experience is a great way for students to challenge themselves and evolve into well-rounded student leaders.
