Jones Named Greater Denton Sports Commission's NT Coach Of The Year

DENTON, Texas (5/14/07) Mean Green head basketball coach Johnny Jones was named the Greater Denton Sports Commission’s North Texas Coach of the Year at the organization’s awards banquet on Monday.

Jones led the Mean Green to a school-record 23 wins in 2007 and its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1988. After six seasons at the helm, Jones already ranks third all-time in North Texas coaching victories with 86.

“We are very glad to have coach Jones recognized as the North Texas Coach of the Year. We look forward to his continued success and we are excited to have him at the banquet,” said Jason Piter of the GDSC.

Jones ranks second in winning percentage among North Texas coaches with at least 150 games, and his 24 wins at the Super Pit over the last two years are the most since 1976-78. With its trip to the NCAA Tournament, North Texas joined Western Kentucky, Louisiana-Lafayette and South Alabama as the only schools to win a Sun Belt Conference crown since Jones’ arrival in Denton in 2001.
