Prospective Student-Athlete Information - Men's Basketball

We are excited about your interest in the University of North Texas and Mean Green men's basketball. Armed with a reputation for high-octane offense and hustling defense, Tony Benford has taken the reins of a North Texas basketball program that is primed to take the next step. A veteran of 20 years of coaching in Division I basketball and 14 postseason trips, Benford is a proven recruiter in the state of Texas that has coached five first-round draft picks and five conference player-of-the-year honorees.

North Texas finished the 2015-16 season at 12-20, but was 11-7 at the Super Pit as only six NT teams won more games since it opened in 1973-74 (42 seasons). The Mean Green finished the season posting a 45.2 field goal percentage mark, the best shooting percentage of the Tony Benford era. Only five teams in the last 20 years had a better shooting mark than the 2015-16 team. Three players scored over 400 points with sophomore Jeremy Combs (461), juniors J-Mychal Reese (471) and Deckie Johnson (451) becomming the 38th, 39th, and 40th members of the 400-point season club in school history. Combs led the team in scoring at 14.9 points per game and was second in C-USA in rebouding at 10.5 per game. Combs earned All-C-USA second team honors and broke former NBA standout Kenyon Martin's C-USA rebounding record (186) with 205 rebounds in C-USA games only.

Facilities
Recognized as one of the finest college basketball facilities in the nation, the Super Pit is home to both the University of North Texas men's and women's basketball teams. Built in 1973, the coliseum is designed for multi-purpose use and is frequently the setting for concerts and theater stage productions as well as athletic events. In 2013, the "E" Practice Facility opened, providing the men's and women's basketball teams with their own practice court.

Named for its benefactor, alumnus Ernie Kuehne, who spearheaded the fund raising to build a practice facility for the men's and women's basketball teams, softball, and golf, the "E" is located in the Mean Green Village on the west side of Bonnie Brae St. across the driveway from the Volleyball Center. The facility's centerpiece is a full-length basketball court, complete with lockerrooms and scoreboard, allowing Mean Green basketball players to practice at any time.

Academic Athletic Services
In the Fall of 2005, the academic and compliance staff relocated to the Mean Green Village. Located on Bonnie Brae, the new Student-Athlete Development Center is three times the size of the former academic center. The Center serves as the cornerstone of the Mean Green Village and is only a short walk from the surrounding sports facilities.
