Graduate Certificate

The Department of Criminal Justice in the College of Public Affairs and Community Service is proud to pioneer an online graduate certificate in Campus Safety and Security Administration. This nine hour certificate addresses the needs of working professionals currently in the field of campus public safety or an associated area such as student affairs. The certificate is designed to provide current and future police and security professionals along with associated individuals with a "first of its kind" advanced credential with a unique specialization in campus police and security operations in higher education. The goal of this advanced credential is to improve and expand the knowledge and competence of those who are charged with providing a safe and secure environment on the campuses of the nation's colleges and universities.

Attending UNT

You'll need to meet the admission requirements for the Toulouse Graduate School and the Department of Criminal Justice. The Department requirements include:

  • Completed application on file with the graduate school.
  • Transcripts on file with the graduate school demonstrating the completion of a bachelor's degree from an accredited university. No GRE required.

Graduate Certificate Requirements

Students interested in the graduate academic certificate in Campus Safety and Security Administration must take 3 courses (9 hours) to earn the certificate.

Required Courses

CJUS 5500 – Seminar in Criminal Justice Administration: This course examines the critical application of selected analytical tools in administering justice agencies: studies of the application of human and financial resources, productivity, measurement and enhancement, and organization design, culture and change in the context of criminal justice agencies.

CJUS 5360 – Managing Campus Safety and Security: This course focuses on campus public safety in higher education with emphasis on effective management approaches. Specifically, the course examines the broad and complex functions that campus public safety professionals perform on a daily basis. Special attention is given to the emergence of campus public safety in higher education, crime on campus, the delivery of safety and security services, and the importance of public safety within the campus community.

CJUS 5370 – Law and Policy in Campus Public Safety: This course examines the complex legal and policy issues arising from the relationship between institutions of higher education and their campus police and security components. Special attention will focus on applicable laws, cases and regulations, institutional policies, and professional expectations within the field of campus public safety.

Optional Course Substitution:

CJUS 5800 – Comparative Issues in Campus Safety and Security (Paris and London Study Abroad Program). This course may substitute for CJUS 5500 (above) or CJUS 5370 (above).
