FAQ

Want to be a music major?

Please consult the College of Music website for detailed information about the various degree programs we offer, requirements for acceptance, applications and auditions information as well as information about the numerous performing organizations, department web-links, faculty bios, and more. UNT is home to highly acclaimed musicians, composers, and performing groups. If you are in the area, attend performances. Most are free.

How does an international student apply?

All students applying for a degree in music must submit two (2) separate application packets.

All apply to the College of Music using the application forms at: music.unt.edu/admissions.

Also apply to the University of North Texas using the application at international.unt.edu if you expect to attend on a Student Visa. (The office of International Admissions at UNT coordinates academic applications for graduate and undergraduate applicants as well as immigration papers). Email: international@unt.edu

Must I audition?

All Undergraduate music degrees require acceptance by audition and application. In addition, all Performance degrees (Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral) require an audition and application. For specific requirements for Master's and Doctoral degrees, refer to:http://www.music.unt.edu/admissions Auditions are scheduled for on-campus and off-campus locations.

Who can help me?

International students may contact Becky King, (940-369-7545), Music Liaison for International Students, for assistance in complying with admission and registration requirements. Email: becky.king@unt.edu. Office: Chilton Hall 211

Questions about masters and doctoral degree programs: contact Devyn Dougherty, Office of Graduate Studies, College of Music at Devyn.dougherty@unt.edu

Questions about Scholarships: contact Becky Hughes at becky.hughes@unt.edu.

How do I apply?

APPLY using the applications and forms for recommendations which can be printed from the website for the College of Music . On the form, you will request an audition appointment on one of the designated audition days. Check the Auditions information on the COM website for audition dates and suggested repertoire. Send the form and recommendation letters to the College of Music , Office for Admissions and Scholarships.

How do I audition?

Auditions are held on and off-campus on designated dates early in the Spring semester (no later than April 1) for students hopeful of beginning their study the following FALL term. Apply EARLY . Application forms, audition dates and repertoire suggestions for auditions are provided on the COM website: music.unt.edu/admissions

How do I get accepted?

To pursue a degree in Music, you must be accepted by the College of Music using the application and audition procedure described on the COM website. Acceptance by the University Admissions alone does not guarantee admission to a Music degree program. A successful audition and written notification from the College of Music is required for acceptance to a degree program in Music.

Auditioning for Jazz Studies?

In addition to applying to the College of Music-COM using the process described at music.unt.edu/admissions, jazz applicants submit two (2) auditions: a live classical audition for Concentration acceptance and a taped sampling of jazz styles and literature as described on the Audition repertoire suggestions on the COM website. See the suggested repertoire requirements for the Concentration Audition at music.unt.edu/admissions. You may locate specific information regarding the Jazz Studies audition requirements at jazz.unt.edu.

What should I expect after an audition?

Letters of audition outcome (acceptance/non-acceptance) are mailed a few weeks after the audition. If you do not receive a Letter of Acceptance from the College of Music, you are not accepted for a music degree program, regardless of the wording of any other letters of acceptance from UNT . Courses taken for credit in this situation may not apply to a UNT degree in music. The letter will indicate what category of applied lessons you will be able to register for.

We offer three categories of applied lessons: MUAS (applied secondary study - elective and non-degree only), MUAC (applied concentration - required for all music degrees other than Performance) and MUAM (applied major - required for all degrees in Performance).

Scholarship notification letters (emails) are sent during the month of April. You must reply to the offer notice in order for the scholarship to be finalized in your behalf.

Are there scholarships for international students?

Yes. All applicants are considered for music scholarships when they audition. Scholarship decisions are made in April. If you are offered a scholarship from the College of Music , you will receive a written (emailed) notice from the Office of Admissions in the College of Music . You must respond to that notice in order to complete the scholarship acceptance. You will receive written confirmation of your acceptance from that office.

What happens if I have not auditioned?

Students who have not passed the TOEFL sometimes apply for IELI (English language study) only, intending to audition after they are English-proficient. These students may receive undergraduate "conditional admission" from UNT Admissions. Acceptance into a music degree program IS NOT guaranteed. In this situation, though it may be possible to take several of the courses required for music degrees, it is NOT possible to take the degree-required lessons until one has been accepted into a specific degree program. Without the required lessons, the student can only partially satisfy the degree requirements. Therefore, electing to come to UNT prior to auditioning and receiving written acceptance is not advisable and will extend the time required to complete a degree. ( Acceptance to the University does NOT guarantee acceptance for a degree program in the College of Music .)

I'm in IELI. Can I take music lessons?

Some IELI students may receive special permission to study applied music (private instruction for university undergraduate credit). You must see Becky King personally to request this permission. ( becky.king@unt.edu ). This permission must be requested prior to the start of a new semester.
