Communication Studies majors examine human communicative behavior and the symbolic processes through which humans interact. Many graduates pursue careers in:

Our rigorous course work equips you with the effective communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills needed for success in today's marketplace.

While pursuing your degree, you'll investigate communication in aesthetic, international, interpersonal, cultural, legal, organizational and political contexts. Opportunities to research gender and diversity, narrative and social change, politics and social influence are also available.

Faculty members are dedicated to high-quality teaching and research. Many have earned recognition for their contributions inside and outside the classroom. Our faculty members have collaborated on projects for the North Texas Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, Denton County Friends of the Family and the Ladder Alliance.

We offer numerous opportunities for you to gain hands-on experience and meet other Communication Studies majors. Our department supports the UNT Debate Team, a student chapter of the Lambda Pi Eta national honor society, the NCA Future Pros organization and the Performance Interest Group.

The Debate Team is consistently recognized as one of the nation's best and consistently has students participate in the prestigious National Debate Tournament. The department also hosts the Petit Jean Performance Festival, one of the most established and longest running national performance festivals.

Communication Studies majors have completed internships with:

Our Career Center, Learning Center and professional academic advisors are among the many valuable resources available to you at UNT. The Career Center can provide advice about internships, future employment opportunities and getting hands-on experience in your major. The Learning Center offers workshops on speed reading, study skills and time management. Academic advisors will help you plan your class schedule each semester.

How to enroll at UNT

High school students

We encourage you to fulfill the graduation requirements for the distinguished level of achievement under the Texas Foundation, Recommended or Distinguished Achievement high school program or the equivalent.

In your junior year, take the SAT or ACT and have your scores sent to UNT.

In your senior year, apply for admission at ApplyTexas.org by March 1 and request that your high school transcript be sent to the UNT admissions office.

Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses can count toward college credit at UNT.

Transfer students

If you're attending a Texas community college, you should consult our online transfer guides, the UNT Undergraduate Catalog and an academic counselor or advisor to review your degree plan.

Another resource is the transfer worksheets, which provide the transfer equivalents from area community colleges for UNT core requirements, the College of Arts and Sciences requirements and the Communication Studies major requirements. Proper planning will allow you to receive the maximum amount of transfer credits.

Our Transfer Center will help you make a successful transition to college life at UNT by connecting you with a peer mentor and other campus resources. Each year, 3,900 students transfer to UNT.
