DENTON — With most of the North Texas tennis season now in the rearview mirror, the Mean Green has just one more match before the Conference USA Championship begins next week. Simply put, it will be a tough and revealing matchup against a crosstown rival that continues to find its way into the national rankings.

North Texas is set to host UTA at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, from the Waranch Tennis Complex in a contest that will also serve as senior day for three Mean Green players. As if the day isn’t set to be emotionally-charged enough, North Texas will also be putting its nine-match home win streak on the line. The Mean Green has not lost at the Waranch Tennis Complex since April 5, 2015.

“These seniors have incredible grades, they’ve won a lot of matches and they’ve raised the bar,” head coach Sujay Lama said. “That’s all you can ask of your seniors. They have taken their jobs as student-athletes so seriously. Because of that, we really want to get a win for them on our home court and keep our momentum going.”

No. 59 UTA is not a team to take lightly. In addition to putting together a 16-3 record on the year, the Mavericks are riding a five-match win streak and have knocked off New Mexico and SMU this season, two teams that defeated the Mean Green earlier this year.

The Mavericks are stacked with talent. At the No. 1, freshman Maria Kononova will battle senior Elizabeth Thoms who is 18-9 on the year, including an 8-3 record at the top spot. At the No. 2 position, junior Angeles de los Rios is an unblemished 8-0 to go along with an overall record of 18-6, posing a stout test for Mean Green freshman Tamuna Kutubidze who has won her last six matchups.

Tex-Mex Productions - an Addison-based company that specializes in live broadcasting - will provide a live stream for all doubles matches and three of the six singles matches that are to be played on Saturday. It can be viewed for free using the links at the top of this page.

Lastly, spring weather continues to complicate the Mean Green’s schedule as the weekend forecast currently calls for a 40 percent chance of precipitation on Saturday. In the event that the match cannot be played at the Waranch Tennis Complex, the contest will be relocated to the Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas for a 5 p.m. start time.

Fans are encouraged to follow North Texas tennis (@MeanGreenTennis) on Twitter or Facebook for the most up-to-date info on the scheduling/location of Saturday’s dual.
