DENTON - As many in Denton flocked to the beach to catch sunshine and ocean waves during last week's spring break, freshman swimmer Isabelle Morris caught a different set of waves - those found in the far-from-sunny confines of the Pohl Recreation Center Natatorium.

Morris - one of the Mean Green's top freestylers - spent her week off preparing for the Canadian Swimming Trials, set to begin on Wednesday, April 1, from the Pan Am Sports Centre in Toronto, Ontario.

"I think it will be an awesome experience," Morris said. "You're competing against the entire country where everyone's fast and we're all excited to race."

The freshman returns to her hometown of Toronto for the time trials, where she will be one of more than 60 athletes competing in the 50, 100 and 200 long course meters freestyle races. The competition will serve as the selection event for the 2015 Pan American Games, FINA World Aquatic Championships and the FISU Games.

With so much on the line, it's no surprise that Morris has taken little time to rest since the North Texas swimming season ended more than a month ago.

"What Isabelle has chosen to do is to stick with a very similar schedule to what she was doing in the fall," head coach Brendon Bray said. "I think she's showing her dedication to being a great athlete outside of our season."

That dedication is paying off as Morris posted one of the best freshman seasons in North Texas history. She picked up wins against perennial powerhouses in Rice, TCU and SMU while also being an integral part of relay teams that combined for 10 top-10 all-time performances throughout the year. Additionally, Morris set program freshman records in the 100 (51.12) and 200 free (1:49.05).

Now moments away from Wednesday's start of competition, Bray has plenty of confidence in the Mean Green's freshman force.

"I think the goal of our team is to have a national and international presence and we want to be represented during meets in the spring and summer," Bray said. "I'm excited that she has a desire to go up there and see what she can do, and I think she'll swim pretty fast too."
