Recent Faculty Activity

Elizabeth Chappell presented a session in March of 2015 for the annual conference of the American String Teachers Association in Salt Lake City, Utah entitled, “ "Rockestra": A curriculum for teaching eclectic styles, arts integration, and for fostering recruitment and community outreach.” In August of 2015 she will travel to Havre, Montana to lead a full day of professional development for music teachers on differentiating instruction for students with disabilities. 

Donna Emmanuel served as the Director of Community Engagement and Service Learning for the University Division of Community Engagement, in addition to working half-time in music education (May, 2013 through May, 2014). In this role, she assisted in developing the Mentor Denton project, gathered and presented data on the 2015 Carnegie Engaged University application, and created an action plan for implementing university-wide community engagement systems and metrics. In addition, she developed an action plan for implementing service learning across the UNT campus.

Dr. Emmanuel was nominated for two prestigious awards in 2013; the UNT Foundation Leadership Award and the UNT Community Engagement Award. These nominations acknowledged her work as Chair of the Faculty Senate and as a member of several University committees as well as her work with UNT's mariachi.

Warren Henry continues to lead study abroad trips to Austria and Hungary. The trip to Hungary in October, 2015 will mark the ninth study abroad trip. More than 125 music education students have participated in this program, many of whom now provide donations to help keep the financial costs down for future students.

Alan McClung's was invited in 2013 to present at two National Conferences: American Choral Directors Association and the National Association for Music Education. As director of the Cambiata Institute, he is finalizing plans for the May 3, 2014 MS/JH National Conference for Choral Music, where twelve invited middle school choirs will perform and ten national presenters will share their middle school expertise.

Debbie Rohwer was selected as recipient of the 2015 Toulouse Scholar Award. She published two articles in Texas Music Education Research, one article in the International Journal of Community Research, two editorials in Update: Applications of Research in Music Education, and a book chapter in The Handbook of Adult and Community Music Education (2015).  In addition, she presented at the Suncoast Music Education Research Symposium, the Texas Music Educators’ Conference, and the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy.  The Denton New Horizons Band, under her direction, performed at the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival and also a fundraiser concert at the Denton Christian Preschool, earning $1500 in donations for the school.

Debbie Rohwer, along with UNT doctoral student, Christina Svec, wrote an article that was accepted for the Music Education Research Journal, "Preceived Value of Research Preparation Opportunities for Future Music Education Professors."

Don Taylor will have 2 upcoming publications in 2013. He was a co-author with Kate Fitzpatrick and Jacqueline Henninger on an article entitled, "Access and Retention of Marganalized Populations within Undergraduate Music Education Degree Programs," found in Journal of Research in Music Education. His second artile, an autoethnography entitled "Learning to Sing Again: A Gay Widower's Reentrance into Community" can be found in the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education.
