Making music together
The College of Music presents 1,000 concerts annually — more than any other arts organization in Texas — many featuring student ensembles. These include two full opera productions annually in the specially designed Lyric Theater; dozens of jazz ensemble performances in on- and off-campus venues; orchestral, wind and choral concerts in Winspear Hall; and chamber and solo recitals by students, faculty, and guest artists. A hallmark of our program is the frequent collaboration of student musicians with faculty, which can be seen in every performance area of the college.
Chamber ensembles
With more than 150 students each semester, groups from the UNT Chamber Music program have been semi-finalists in international competitions such as Plowman and Fischoff.
Choral ensembles
UNT has an outstanding choral program with six choirs. The A Cappella Choir has appeared in concert around the world. The Collegium Singers have a YouTube video with more than one million hits.
Early music ensembles
Focused on music from the 16th through 18th centuries, the UNT Early Music program gives students the rare opportunity to study and perform at a high level on period instruments.
Jazz ensembles
The world-renowned Jazz Studies program is home to the six-time Grammy nominated One O’Clock Lab Band as well as more than a dozen other vocal and instrumental jazz ensembles.
Opera
Each year, the award winning UNT Opera presents two full productions, carefully selected to expose students to a variety of music in a broad range of theatrical styles.
Orchestral ensembles
The two UNT orchestras involve 175 students who gain insight into the physical and mental techniques needed to grow musically through the study of a broad range of orchestral repertoire.
Percussion ensembles
UNT Percussionists explore a variety of styles in classical percussion ensembles, drumlines, steel bands, and ensembles devoted to music from Africa, Cuba, Brazil, Bali and South India.
Wind ensembles
Including the three-time Grammy nominated North Texas Wind Symphony, UNT has eight wind bands in which students experience a variety of repertoire and develop their musicianship.
