As a public university charged with responsibly ushering the next generation into the future and advancing communities through knowledge, UNT’s first priority is to provide a safe and welcoming environment for our students, faculty, staff and visitors.
UNT has been asked our opinion on the issue of concealed carrying of firearms in our classrooms, residence halls, fraternity and sorority houses, and other university facilities.
The UNT Administration and I believe the information shared by the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators, Inc. (IACLEA) to be instructive and useful.
We concur with IACLEA’s position that “. . . there is no credible evidence to suggest that the presence of students carrying concealed weapons would reduce violence on our college campuses.”
We believe additional research and a careful review of risk factors by campus public safety stakeholders to be critical “first” steps in the process of determining the potential impact of allowing concealed firearms carry in university facilities.
