Scuttled loan program forces college student to seek aid elsewhere

Repeal of a no-interest college loan program will have hundreds of incoming students looking for other ways to pay for higher education this year.

Lexi Clark, an incoming freshman at the University of North Texas this fall, was second on a waiting list of more than 400 incoming UNT students hoping to receive the loan that covers $4,000 in tuition each semester.

 

 

    

 

Financial advisers assured Clark she would get it, but just months before the first day of school, Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill that ended the program.

Energy companies have tentatively agreed to limit their use of land on the city’s south side so that a residential developer can build and sell houses there.

The City Council is expected to review the agreement in a work session Tuesday afternoon.

The energy companies — EagleRidge Energy, Corbin Exploration Limited Partnership and ARP Barnett — have agreed to work with the development group — Kelsoe & Riley and the Pitner Family Limited Partnership — and stay within about 8 acres around existing gas wells just off Ryan Road, near Ryan Elementary School.

State to expand benefits to gay spouses

Same-sex spouses of state employees will now be eligible for benefits, as well as their dependents, and can enroll during the current open enrollment period.

This means Deborah Leliaert, a vice president at the University of North Texas, will be able to enroll her wife, Paula Woolworth, for benefits this week. The two filed a lawsuit earlier this month against the state’s Employee Retirement System in the hopes of getting Woolworth ensured through the state’s health policy.

“This is a win for Texas,” Leliaert said. “It makes good sense for both the state and its employees.”

Groups seek to exit suits

Local activists and the national nonprofit that helped them with the campaign to ban hydraulic fracturing in Denton have asked to be dismissed from a pair of lawsuits against the city.

The Denton Drilling Advisory Group and Earthworks intervened in the lawsuits last year. They asked to stand with the city as co-defendants against the Texas General Land Office and the Texas Oil and Gas Association.

Representatives from both groups said they wanted to help defend the ban. But on Wednesday, they jointly filed motions of nonsuit, asking the judges to allow them to exit the cases.
