Study Abroad
The department of criminal justice is pleased to be able to offer you a broad range of study abroad opportunities. Whether you are an undergraduate, graduate, taking a certificate, an alumni or friend we have short term, semester long and year-long study abroad experiences awaiting you.
We currently offer four short term study abroad courses led by faculty: December for 8 days, March for 8 days, June for 14 days and July for 8 days.
Our short term faculty led courses are available to students from any discipline but all have a strong criminal justice theme. December courses depart soon after the end of the fall semester so that you are back in the US for the holiday. This course takes you to London for an exploration of crime in Legal London during the time of Charles Dickens. We then go to Paris for a short tour of a number of 19th century crime scenes. The March course departs before spring break and takes in London, Oxford, Paris and Brussels.
This course focuses on contemporary issues related to major crimes and public order, particularly as it pertains to universities. The June course, our longest, investigates crime and punishment in England and France from a historical and contemporary perspective. Included in this course are joint sentencing exercises with students from UWL. The shorter July course is a study of the world of spies and spying. Also based in London and Paris with excursion options to Cambridge.
Already know London and Paris? Development is underway to offer a Human Rights course that will be based in the beautiful Dutch city of Leiden. Leiden has a long tradition of supporting human rights; it is widely known as the "city of refugees". It even has a museum of the house from which Pilgrims left Leiden for America. This course will be a combination of classroom based lectures and site visits. The wonderful city of Amsterdam is just a short train ride away and participants will visit Amsterdam and Brussels, Belgium before departing to Paris, France for two days to conclude the course and return to the US.
